Santa Ana High School utilized its big-play offense to perfection Saturday night in a 33-14 victory over Villa Park in the Century League opener in Fred Kelly Stadium at Orange.

Saints Coach Dick Hill said he has never had so much talent at his skill positions, and it would be difficult to argue with him based on Saturday’s performances.

Santa Ana’s big three--quarterback Richard Fanti, tailback Robert Lee and wide receiver Royal Wilbon--played major roles.

Lee gained 208 yards in 22 carries and scored four touchdowns in three quarters of action.

The Saints (1-0, 5-1) led 7-0 after the first quarter when Wilbon threw to Fanti for an 80-yard touchdown pass play. Lee took over on Santa Ana’s next possession, gaining long yardage on several runs and scoring on a nine-yard run for a 20-0 halftime lead.

Lee saved his best for the second half, taking a pitchout 80 yards on the first play to give Santa Ana a 26-0 lead. With 2:17 left in the period, Lee scored his final touchdown on a one-yard run.

About the only thing Santa Ana couldn’t do was convert extra points, as the Saints missed two kicks and failed on one two-point conversion.

Villa Park (0-1, 2-4) made it respectable with two quick touchdowns late in the game.

Fanti completed 6 of 9 passes for 155 yards, and Wilbon caught 3 passes for 103 yards.
