FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Darcey Leads CSUN Past Cal Poly Pomona in 4 Games

Behind Sue Darcey’s 18 kills, the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team defeated Cal Poly Pomona at home on Tuesday night, 15-7, 13-15, 15-10, 15-10.

Darcey led CSUN, the defending California Collegiate Athletic Assn. champion, while teammate Alissa Evans contributed 15 kills. Northridge middle blocker Chris Tedeschi had 17 digs and 5 blocking assists.

CSUN is 21-4, 5-0 in conference. Cal Poly Pomona dropped to 2-3 in conference.

CSUN captain Karen Lontka, said Coach Walt Ker was disappointed with the Lady Matadors’ serving. They missed 19 serves.

“We missed a lot of serves, but not one player missed a lot of serves,” Lontka said. “He’s said he was tired of winning ugly.”

Lontka believes Northridge was prepared for Pomona, but that a better effort will be needed to defeat unbeaten UC Riverside on Friday night.

“If we do this against Riverside, we’re going to make it tough on ourselves,” Lontka said. “I think we have a great transition game, if we can block and serve, we’ll do well.”

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Simi Valley def. Royal, 13-15, 15-5, 2-15, 15-13, 15-13--Suzi Koonter had 17 kills and 12 blocks for Royal in the defeat. Teammates Chris Barrett (11 kills), Lura Braden (10 kills) and Sara Toring (10 kills) also played well for Royal (4-5 in the Marmonte League). Simi Valley is 5-3 in league.

Louisville def. St. Genevieve, 15-7, 15-9, 15-5--Louisville, which extended its winning streak to 10 matches, is 7-0 in the San Fernando Valley League.

Chaminade def. Notre Dame, 8-15, 15-3, 15-12, 15-4--Kathy Hayes had 15 kills and four blocks, and teammate Lisa Macias added eight kills for Chaminade (9-1, 6-1 in the San Fernando Valley League). Notre Dame (3-4 in league) was led by Laurie Jones with four kills and six blocks, and Dana Marasca, who served for 12 points.

Agoura def. Santa Clara, 15-6, 15-10, 6-15, 15-7--Shannon Matthews had 12 kills and four blocks to lead Agoura (8-3, 4-2) in the Frontier League match at Agoura. Agoura’s Wendy Bennett had 10 service aces and three kills, and Jolene Clemens had 10 kills.

Burroughs def. Hart, 15-5, 16-14, 15-5--Debbie Penney and Mary Ann Wagner had 15 and 13 kills, respectively for Burroughs, (10-3, 6-1 in the Foothill League).

Village Christian def. L.A. Baptist, 6-15, 15-13, 15-7, 12-15, 15-5--Karin Yoho had 16 kills and Heather Hepburn had eight kills for Village Christian (16-2, 10-1 in the Alpha League). L.A. Baptist is 7-3 in league.

Poly def. Van Nuys, 15-9, 15-9: In an East Valley League match at Poly on Monday, Van Nuys fell to 0-9 and 0-5 in league. Van Nuys is in its first year of volleyball.

Grant def. Marshall 15-8, 15-2: Behind the serving of Janna Horowitz and Tina Gumprecht, Grant (5-4, 3-2) pulled into a second-place tie in the East Valley League with Marshall (3-2) on Monday. Horowitz served for 11 straight points in the second game, and Gumprecht had 10 service points.

GIRLS TENNIS

Chatsworth 6, Monroe 1: Chatsworth won three of four singles matches behind the play of Nicole Nelson (8-0), Ada Rud (8-5) and Erin Doyle (8-1). Monroe’s Susan Bensky defeated Amy Joella in the No. 1 singles match.

The Chatsworth doubles teams of Kim Christianson-Marcy Linsky, Shelley Koch-Seon Kim and Nicole Fox-Susan Rudosky swept their matches.

WATER POLO

Crespi 15, Mater Dei 14: After two overtime periods, Crespi’s Andy Carbonell scored one of his three goals to give the Celts a sudden-death victory. Dave Scott scored eight goals for Crespi (11-5, 6-1 in the Del Rey League). Mater Dei is 1-5 in league.

Calabasas 14, Harvard 7: Fred Brende and Jed Simon scored two goals each in the loss for Harvard (5-1 in the Frontier League).
