Newport Harbor 42, Estancia 0--Six players scored touchdowns for Newport Harbor at Davidson Field.

The Sailors (1-1, 4-3) struck early and never let up as quarterback Kirk Summers threw touchdown passes to Steve Kalatschan and Ed Milum in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.

Estancia (0-2, 0-7) could only net 41 yards and one first down in the first half against the hard-hitting Sailor defense, which set up the next two scores. After Scott Morency’s five-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter, the defense gave the offense the ball at the Eagle 23 following a short punt and 15-yard roughing penalty.

Three plays later, Mason Thompson scored from the one with 25 seconds left in the half, giving the Sailors a 28-0 lead.

Newport Harbor opened the third quarter by scoring on its first two possesions behind Vince Brejtfus. The backup quarterback connected with Tyler Parks for a 15-yard scoring toss before moving the offense into position for Aaron Guptill’s touchdown run.

“We needed a good win tonight,” Sailor Coach Jeff Brinkley said. “We had to get back on track after losing the last two in a row (28-17 to Tustin and 32-0 to El Toro).

“Both quarterbacks played well tonight. I’ve had confidence in Summers and Brejtfus all year and they showed what they could do tonight.”

Brinkley’s postgame celebration was tempered, however, when asked about next week’s opponent, undefeated Saddleback.

“They’ve got speed to burn,” he said with a laugh. “I think we’ll bring our nets for this game.”
