PREP FOOTBALL : South Coast League : 1st Quarter All Capo Valley Needs : 22-Point Outburst Overwhelms San Clemente in 42-13 Win

Capistrano Valley High School used its best first quarter of the season, rolling to a 22-0 lead, then coasted to a 42-13 victory over San Clemente Friday night in South Coast League play at Capistrano Valley.

The 42-point total was Capistrano Valley’s most ever in the nine-year series.

The Cougars scored on a 69-yard drive after the opening kickoff, then took advantage of two San Clemente fumbles for touchdown drives of 47 and 18 yards.

Cougar quarterback Todd Marinovich threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Brent Parker and scored himself on a nine-yard scramble. Back-up quarterback Chris Long added a 12-yard touchdown pass to Parker in the second quarter and a 9-yard scoring toss to Randy Stark in the fourth.

Capistrano Valley led, 29-0, at halftime. The Cougars ran 35 plays to just 14 for San Clemente in the first half and outgained the Tritons, 239 to 93.

Capistrano Valley moved into third place in the South Coast League with a record of 2-1, 5-3 overall. San Clemente dropped out of the playoff picture at 0-3, 3-5.

Mission Viejo 24, Dana Hills 7--A last-second touchdown pass in the first half propelled the Diablos to a victory against the Dolphins at Dana Hills.

Diablo quarterback Tony Arnone hit reserve running back Eric Eckdahl with a 24-yard scoring pass with just two seconds left in the half to give Mission Viejo a 10-7 lead.

The victory kept Mission Viejo (3-0, 5-3) in a tie with El Toro for first place in the South Coast League.

Dana Hills (1-2, 3-5) scored the first points against Mission Viejo in 13 quarters on a 90-yard drive early in the second quarter. Dolphin running back Billy Mitchell recovered teammate Jason Burden’s goal-line fumble in the end zone to give Dana Hills an early 7-3 lead.

Mission Viejo dominated the game in the second half, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter.

Arnone hit Danny Reed with a 13-yard touchdown pass with 7:09 left in the third quarter, and Arnone added his third touchdown pass with 16 seconds left in the quarter with a 10-yard toss to Brett Varner.
