Community Colleges : Platt Guides Southwestern to Win Over OCC

CHULA VISTA — Orange Coast College’s Brett Recktenwald returned a kickoff 99 yards, scored on an 85-yard punt return and made a key interception on his own three-yard line. But the Pirates couldn’t overcome the passing of Brad Platt, as Southwestern College defeated Orange Coast 34-27 in a Mission Conference game Saturday.
Platt was 18 of 33 for 253 yards, including touchdown passes of 49 and 23 yards to wide receiver Robert Claiborne.
Southwestern is 5-1 in conference and 6-1 overall. Orange Coast drops to 2-4 and 2-5.
Orange Coast cut Southwestern’s lead to 34-27 with 1:14 after Recktenwald returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown. Orange Coast took over iwth 30 seconds left, but the game ended after two Jon Nowotny incomplete passes.
Southwestern opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Dave Swigart ran 38 yards off tackle for a touchdown. The play was set up after wide receiver Faasamala Thealoa dove for a wobley pass from Nowatny.
Saddleback 62, San Diego City 7--Saddleback (4-2, 5-2) scored nine touchdowns and rolled up 605 yards in total offense to win the Mission Conference game.
Saddleback quarterback Pat Hegarty, playing less than three quarters, completed 13 of 19 passes for 201 yards and 4 touchdowns.
