Community College Football : South Coast Conference : Golden West Gets a Tricky Victory

Share

In winning its first six games, Golden West College stayed with the basics--a solid defense combined with a strong rushing attack.

However, Coach Ray Shackleford went to the back pages of his playbook Saturday night to find a couple of trick plays to help the Rustlers defeat Mt. San Antonio, 37-21, in South Coast Conference action in Costa Mesa’s LeBard Stadium.

Defensive back Rene Oliver recoved a Mountie fumble on the 50-yard line to set up Golden West’s first score.

On the next play, wide receiver John Spoor took an end around, stopped short of the line of scrimmage and threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Lance Perry. There was no Mt. SAC defender within 20 yards of Perry when he caught the ball.

“It was nice to have the right time to do it after the turnover,” Shackleford said. “We just played well. I was surprised by the score.”

The Rustlers, ranked third in Southern California and sixth in the nation, then slipped into the standard handoff here, short pass there style that has them off to the best start in the school’s history.

Running back Carl Satterfield scored on a two-yard run with a minute left in the first quarter to put the first-place Rustlers (4-0, 7-0) ahead, 14-0.

But late in the second quarter those darn tricksters were at it again. The Mounties appeared to have stopped the Rustlers and forced them into punt formation.

Shackleford called for a fake and blocking back Don Aselin threw to a wide-open Dan Ramsey in the flat for a 33-yard gain and a first down.

After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Mounties (0-4, 2-4-1), the Rustlers had a first down on the Mt. SAC 13. Two plays later, Eric Lawton connected with Spoor for a 10-yard touchdown and a 24-0 first-half lead.

Lawton had another strong game, completing 13 of 23 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown before coming out in the middle of the third quarter.

Lawton, a sophomore from Huntington Beach High School, has thrown 129 consecutive passes without an interception this season.

He also rushed 14 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to give the Rustlers a 37-0 lead with 6:27 left.

Cerritos 28, Fullerton 19--Freshman Andre Wooton rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Falcons (3-1, 4-2-1) at home. Wooton had touchdown runs of 14, 2 and a school-record 91 yards. He finished with 184 yards in 24 carries.

Quarterback Richard Williams was 21 of 41 for 267 yards with 2 touchdowns for the Hornets (2-2, 3-4).
