STATISTICAL WATCH : Crespi and Kennedy: the Scrooge Brothers

Crespi, the top defensive team in the area among Southern Section teams, limited Loyola to minus-7 yards rushing last week. Loyola went in averaging 209 rushing yards a game. Kennedy leads area City Section teams in playing miserly defense and held Simi Valley to 71 total yards last week. Here is a look at how their defenses have fared for the season:

Passing: According to the NCAA passing formula, Jim Bonds’ performance for Hart on Friday (20 of 24 for 317 yards with 6 touchdowns and no interceptions) rates a 276.8. For the year Bonds would rate a 178.3. To compare, the NCAA leaders are Jim Harbaugh of Michigan at 169.5 and Vinny Testaverde of Miami at 163.6. . . . After catching one pass in each of Canoga Park’s first four games, Jeremy Mears has hauled in 20 in the past three games and ranks third among Valley-area receivers in the City Section.

Rushing: Alemany, which had gained only 255 yards rushing in its first seven games, rushed for 211 yards last Friday against St. Francis. Senior running back Jeff Portugal led the Indians with 98 yards in 14 carries.

Streaks: Canyon High extended its streak to 46 wins by defeating Quartz Hill, 45-3, to tie the Southern Section record set by Temple City in 1969-73. The state mark is 47 by Cardinal-Newman of Santa Rosa in 1972-77. Douglass of Oklahoma City set the national record of 76 from 1949 to 1956.

Scoring: Crespi has outscored its opponents, 283-37. Saturday night against Loyola, Crespi was shut out in the first half for the first time this season. . . . Coach Joel Schaeffer thinks Reseda may have set a school record for total points when his team blasted North Hollywood, 50-0. The Regents might have at least set a team record for biggest turnaround in a seven-day span. The week before, the Regents were blanked by Sylmar, 12-0. Reseda scored seven touchdowns in the rout of the Huskies, all of them either on the ground or with special teams.
