Packers Lose Wright . . . and Game, 16-7

An illegal head butt by Washington’s Charles Mann Sunday knocked Green Bay quarterback Randy Wright from the game, and was the turning point in Washington’s 16-7 victory, according to Packers Coach Forrest Gregg.

Wright led the Packers to a touchdown on their first possession, but Green Bay was blanked the rest of the day, and two touchdown passes by Jay Schroeder lifted the Redskins to 8-2. Green Bay fell to 1-9.

The Packers were leading 7-6 when Wright was injured and had to leave the game with 33 seconds left in the first half. Mann was penalized for roughing the quarterback.

Wright, who suffered a concussion and a neck sprain, was hospitalized overnight for X-rays and observation. It is expected, however, that he will be able to play against Tampa Bay next Sunday.

“I thought it was a very bad call,” Mann said. “Just as he released the ball, we hit head to head. I knew it wasn’t late. (The referee) said I hit him in the head, but it wasn’t vicious.”

Wright completed 6 of 12 passes for 55 yards. His replacement, Chuck Fusina, completed 12 of 16 for 99 yards.

Schroeder completed 13 of 23 attempts for 167 yards as winds of about 25 m.p.h. swirled through the stadium.

Rookie running back Kenneth Davis gave the Packers a 7-0 lead on a three-yard pass from Wright on the first possession of the game. Schroeder came back and hit wide receiver Ricky Sanders with a 26-yard touchdown pass, but kicker Max Zendejas missed the extra point and Green Bay led, 7-6, at halftime. Zendejas missed two extra points in Washington’s victory against Minnesota last week.

Schroeder completed a six-yard touchdown pass to running back Kelvin Bryant to put the Redskins in front, 13-7, with 50 seconds left in the third quarter, and Zendejas added a 30-yard field goal.

Schroeder connected on a 20-yard pass to wide receiver Gary Clark and a 26-yarder to tight end Clint Didier to set up the field goal by Zendejas with 5:29 left.
