Orange County Roundup : Fullerton to Play Alberta in Exhibition Game

Cal State Fullerton basketball Coach George McQuarn will get his first real look at the team Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. coaches have picked to finish second in the conference when the Titans play the University of Alberta in an exhibition game starting at 7:30 Saturday night in Titan Gym.

McQuarn will use the game to help determine which players will work their way into the Titans’ top eight and receive most of the playing time during the 1986-87 season. Fullerton opens its regular season against at Texas Tech Nov. 28.

The Titans’ starting lineup against Alberta figures to be juniors Eugene Jackson and Richard Morton at guards, Derek Jones and Henry Turner--also juniors--at forwards and senior Herman Webster at center. With the exception of Jones, a transfer from Long Beach City College, all of the starters had substantial roles in last season’s 16-16 record. Morton averaged 13.3 points per game last season and is expected to lead the offensive.

Tyrone Ree, a transfer from Murray State community junior college in Tishomingo, Okla., suffered a sprained ankle in Fullerton’s intrasquad game Wednesday night and will miss the exhibition game. Ree was expected to challenge Jackson for a starting point guard position. Fullerton trainer Jerry Lloyd said Thursday that Ree would be out for a week to 10 days.

Tickets for Freedom Bowl III, Orange County’s college football bowl game to played in Anaheim Stadium on Tuesday, Dec. 30, have gone on sale at all Ticketron outlets in Southern California. Tickets also will go on sale Monday at the Anaheim city ticket office in the Convention Center, 800 West Katella Ave. Visa and MasterCard orders can be made by calling 634-1300 or (213) 410-1062. All tickets, priced at $15 and $20, are reserved. The participating teams will be announced on or after Nov. 22.

The City of Stanton Recreation and Leisure Services Dept. is currently seeking teams for its 1986-87 winter adult Slo-Pitch softball and adult basketball leagues.

Men and women 16 and older, are invited to participate in an open softball league, with a schedule to consist of 10 games and playoffs on the Norman Ross Sports Facility at Stanton. Men’s leagues are scheduled for Sunday afternoons, Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights; a coed league will be scheduled for Sunday mornings and a women’s league on Sunday nights.

The basketball league is seeking men 18 and older for its C-D league, with a schedule of 10 games and playoffs to be played in the Boys & Girls Club of Stanton. The games, scheduled to begin Nov. 30, will be played on Sundays.

The Huntington Beach Athletic Club will host a Jai-Ball exhibition Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m.

There will be leaflets available at the club, so that viewers will be able to understand Jai-Ball rules and follow the game. Admission is free. For more information, call 962-8961.

Registration is open for adult teams interested in participating in the Fourth Annual Christmas Basketball Tournament, to be held at Hollywood High School Dec. 13-14 and 20-21.

The tournament is seeking teams to represent their communities in three divisions: men’s open pro-am, men’s 6-foot 2-inch and under, and a women’s open pro-am. Final day for registration is Nov. 30.

The Orange Flyers Track Club is hosting its sixth annual Villa Park Turkey Trot, featuring half-mile, two-mile, five-mile and half-marathon runs, Nov. 30 at Villa Park High School.

Registration will begin on race day at 7 a.m. Age group competition in men’s and women’s divisions will begin with the half-mile event at 7:45 a.m. All proceeds will benefit Orange County junior high school cross-country programs.
