METRO-MESA

Chula Vista 15, Sweetwater 14--Brian Murphy threw two touchdown passes and a two-point conversion pass to rally Chula Vista (3-1, 9-1) from a 14-0 deficit in the final nine minutes to beat Sweetwater (3-1, 9-1). The loss snapped Sweetwater’s string of 34 consecutive wins in league play and its 9-game winning streak against Chula Vista. Pierre Jones, who ran for 200 yards in 30 attempts, scored in the first and fourth quarters to give Sweetwater the lead. Murphy threw a 65-yard pass to Greg Rydarrstam with 8:52 remaining and then connected with Shawn Miranda for the two-point conversion. Sione Fioko then ran 38 yards in 6 carries to set up the winning touchdown, a 6-yard pass to Sultan Mohammad.

CITY WESTERN

La Jolla 31, Mission Bay 0--La Jolla (4-1, 8-2) earned a share of the league title. Leading 10-0 in the third quarter, it scored 21 points to break the game open. Tom Joas scored on a 1 yard touchdown run and then the Brown brothers took over. Eric, a defensive lineman, returned a fumble 15 yards for a touchdown and Vincent, a defensive back, intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. Mission Bay (2-3, 3-7) was held to 52 yards total offense.

University City 30, Clairemont 7--Paul MacRenato scored on runs of 1, 7 and 46 yards to lead host University City. University City (4-1, 7-2), which learned earlier in the day that its loss to Kearny was reversed by forfeit, earned a share of the league title because of this strange “doubleheader” sweep. Clairemont (1-4, 1-9) took a 7-3 first quarter lead on a 55-yard pass play for a touchdown from Lamount Jackson to Brian Gibson. University City regained the lead when sophomore Darnes Taylor scored on a seven-yard touchdown run. Taylor had 57 yards in 11 carries and MacRenato had 161 yards on 18 carries.

USDHS 23, Kearny 8--Martin Correia scored on touchdown runs of 30 and 4 yards to lead USDHS (4-1, 9-1) to a tie for the league title. The USDHS defense stopped Kearny quarterback Scott Welish, who was just 2-of-16 for 27 yards and was forced to leave the game with a dislocated shoulder in the third quarter. Kearny (0-5, 2-7) scored its only points in the second quarter on a two-yard run by Alan Ring and a pass from Welish to Brian Archer for the two-point conversion. Running back James Wilson added a touchdown run of two yards for USDHS.

CITY EASTERN

Morse 23, Mira Mesa 6--Morse (3-1-1, 6-3-1) enhanced its at-large chances with the win at Mesa College, getting a San Diego County record-setting 56-yard field goal by Herman Puentes in the third quarter. The section record book lists 53 yards as the previous record, set in 1979 by Hilltop’s Brian Wagner. Earlier Friday, University City’s Ron White kicked a 54-yard field goal. Mira Mesa (4-1, 7-3) still won the league title.

Point Loma 20, Patrick Henry 6--John Stanley’s 11-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave Point Loma (2-2-1, 6-3-1) all the points it needed to beat Patrick Henry (0-5, 0-10). Peter Dolan kicked field goals of 27 and 23 yards for Point Loma, which scored its other touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone by defensive tackle Terry Hampton. Patrick Henry scored on a 35-run by John Roberts.

Madison 34, Serra 0--Jimmy Robinson rushed for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns on 18 carries to lead Madison (4-1, 7-3), which scored 31 points in the first half. Robinson scored on runs of four and five yards and also ran for a two-point conversion. Mike Main scored on a 1-yard run and defensive back Terry Anderson returned an intercepted pass 22 yards for another touchdown. Quarterback Maurice Jackson hit Olun Graves on a 15-yard score. Serra finished 1-4, 2-8.

CITY CENTRAL

Lincoln 57, St. Augustine 0--Marcus Hopkins and Kevin Key each ran for three touchdowns as Lincoln (4-1, 9-1) beat visiting St. Augustine (1-4, 2-8) to tie Crawford for the league title. Hopkins rushed for 125 yards in 8 attempts, including an 85-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Lincoln scored its other touchdowns on a 21-yard pass from Keith Mitchell to Patrick Rowe and on 3-yard run by Damon Candler.

Crawford 12, Hoover 7--Despite eight turnovers, Hoover’s undoing was a penalty for illegal motion. Sherman Robinson’s 1-yard run for an apparent touchdown with 3:19 left in the game was nullified by the penalty. Two plays later, Crawford’s John White recovered a Robinson fumble to end Hoover’s threat. Crawford (4-1, 6-4) earned a share of the league title and will be its No. 2 playoff representative. Crawford had only 98 yards in total offense, but one-yard touchdown runs in the first half by Eugene Ethridge and Keith Williams were enough. Hoover (3-2, 7-3) lost five fumbles and had three passes intercepted. Hoover suffered its second straight loss since upsetting Lincoln and has to hope for an at-large bid to the playoffs.

Robert Padillo rushed 17 times for 148 yards and touchdowns of 12 and 25 yards as Granite Hills blew open a narrow 13-6 haltime advantage. Monte Vista fell to 1-3 and 5-5.

GROSSMONT 2A

Grossmont 7, El Capitan 3--Grossmont drove 52 yards in four plays on its first possession, scoring on a 1-yard run by quarterback Mark Stillwell and held on to win the league title. El Capitan’s Kurt Wilkins kicked a 32-yard field goal with two minutes remaining in the first half. Defending league champion El Capitan (2-1, 3-6) was stopped inside Grossmont’s 30-yard line three times in the first half and once in the second half. Linebacker Jerry Brewer preserved the win for Grossmont (3-0, 6-3-1) with a fumble recovery at his 16 on the last play of the third quarter.

METRO-SOUTH BAY

Mar Vista 49, Marian 12--Gonzalo Quintero ran for 187 yards on 14 carries, including touchdown runs of 35, 3 and 33 yards to lead host Mar Vista (1-2, 4-5-1) over Marian (0-3, 1-8). Mar Vista receiver Scott Brooks made three catches for 52 yards, including touchdown receptions of 6 yards from Todd Habel and 5 yards from Spencer Burnett. Marian’s Martin Torrez rushed 16 times for 170 yards, scoring both of his team’s touchdowns on runs of 47 and 3 yards.

NONLEAGUE

San Marcos 9, Torrey Pines 7--Abel Neri atoned for a missed extra point by kicking a 34-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining to give San Marcos (6-3-1) the victory. Torrey Pines (4-6) scored on an 11-yard run by Scott Calkins in the second quarter. San Marcos rallied in the second half, scoring a touchdown on a five-yard run by Bill Lawe in the third quarter.
