San Diego Volleyball : UCSD Reaches Regional Final

UC San Diego outlasted La Verne, 15-3, 15-11, 11-15, 11-15, 15-11 Friday night to advance to the NCAA Division III women’s volleyball West Regional final at La Jolla.

UCSD (39-6) will play Menlo College, a 8-15, 15-9, 3-15, 15-4, 16-14 winner over Colorado College, at 8 tonight in the Triton Pavilion. Second-ranked Menlo is 42-7.

Janet Hughes, who played at Francis Parker High School, led top-ranked UCSD with 21 kills and Carol Lipson added 16. Lipson and setter Kim Stonecipher, from Poway High, were also named first-team All-Americans. Hughes, was named to the second team.

In West Coast Athletic Conference action, United States International University defeated the University of San Francisco, 15-7, 15-12, 15-8.

The Gulls (7-2 in conference, 18-13 overall) were led by Nancy Dome’s 16 kills. Middle blocker Claudia Johnson added 15 kills for USIU, which will play Santa Clara at 7:30 tonight in the USIU Gym. USF fell to 1-9 in the WCAC and 7-22 overall.

In a second WCAC match, Santa Clara defeated the University of San Diego, 15-8, 15-13, 14-16, 15-7 at USD. The Toreras (0-9, 0-18) were led by Gina Trapletti with 21 kills and 9 digs. Santa Clara is 4-6 and 16-16.
