ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Sea View League : Sailors Are Edged by Sea Kings

Corona del Mar High School forced seven turnovers Friday night and had two impressive goal-line stands in its 13-10 victory over rival Newport Harbor in front of 3,000 on Davidson Field.

Both teams, which finished 2-3 in the Sea View league, were hoping for Tustin to beat University to force a three-way tie and a coin flip to determine the league’s third-place Central Conference playoff representative. University’s upset of the Tillers meant that Newport Harbor (5-5 overall) and Corona del Mar (4-6) can now only hope for a wild card berth.

The Sailors’ defense helped Newport Harbor take an early lead. Matt McDonald recovered Sean Woolsey’s fumble on the Sea King 25 yard-line. Three plays later, Kirk Summers hit Mark Craig in the corner of the end zone with a 17-yard pass at the 8:32 mark of the first quarter. Craig caught 8 passes for 156 yards. The Sea Kings tied the score at the end of the first quarter on an 11-yard pass from Kurt Ehman to Gary Blower.

With 14 seconds left in the first half, Newport Harbor had a first down at the Corona del Mar three-yard line but Sean Steele intercepted Summers in the end zone to end the threat.

The Sea Kings, who intercepted Summers six times in all, got a fumble recovery from Jeff Dailey at the Sailor 20 on the last play of the third quarter to set up the winning touchdown.

Matt Patterson scored on a one-yard run early in the fourth quarter to give the Sea Kings a 13-10 lead.

Ehman’s third interception of the game, which came at the Corona Del Mar 10 with 31 seconds left, clinched the win.
