Golf Roundup : Bean Stalks, Finally Passes Rookie Love for 2-Stroke Win

Andy Bean followed his game plan to the letter, caught faltering rookie Davis Love III on the back nine and scored a two-stroke victory Saturday in the Isuzu Kapalua International golf tournament at Kapalua, Hawaii.

“I was trying to make birdies but mostly I wanted to stay in position, be in position to take advantage if he made any mistakes,” said Bean, who played without a bogey in the final round.

And he was right there, with the pars he needed, as Love made two mistakes--each resulting in a bogey--over the last four holes.

Bean won it with a closing 70 in gusty winds for a 278 total--10 under par on the Kapalua Bay course--and earned $150,000. Love, who collected $113,245 on the official PGA Tour this year, shot a 73 for a 280 total and picked up another $84,000.

Australia’s Ian Baker-Finch overcame a double bogey on the third hole to maintain a three-stroke lead after three rounds of the $275,000 Australian Open at Melbourne.

Baker-Finch shot a par 72 for a total of 207. Three Australians--Graham Marsh, Bob Shearer and Rodger Davis--and Sweden’s Magnus Persson were at 210.

West Germany’s Bernhard Langer had a 72 and was at 211, while defending champion Greg Norman was at 214.

Yasuhiro Funatogawa of Japan shot a two-under-par 70 to take a two-stroke lead over Australia’s David Graham with a 205 total in the third round of the $500,000 Taiheiyo Club Masters tournament at Gotemba Japan.
