East Roundup : Comizio’s Two Touchdown Runs Help Make Penn Nearly Perfect, 17-10

Rich Comizio ran for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns Saturday as Penn moved within one game of its first perfect season since 1904 with a 17-10 Ivy League victory over Harvard at Philadelphia.

Comizio scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards and ran his season total to 942 yards, a Penn record, topping the mark of 880 yards set by Gerry Santini in 1968.

The Quakers (9-0 overall, 6-0 in the league) will seek their fifth straight league title next week against Cornell at Ithaca, N.Y.

The Quakers led, 3-0, at halftime, but Comizio’s touchdown runs in the third quarter made it 17-0.

Harvard (2-7, 2-4) rallied on a 17-yard pass from Tom Yohe to George Sorbara and a 28-yard field goal by Andy Maretz.

Boston College 27, Syracuse 9--Troy Stradford rushed for 184 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown with 1:34 left, as the Eagles enhanced their bowl chances by routing the Orangemen at Boston.

Shawn Halloran connected on 12 of 19 passes for 203 yards and 2 touchdowns, a 9-yarder to Kelvin Martin and a 66-yarder to Darren Flutie, as the Eagles (7-3) won their sixth straight game.

Syracuse (5-5), which started 0-4, had its winning streak stopped at three.

Pitt 20, Rutgers 6--Joe Felitsky, the Panthers’ third starting quarterback in three weeks, passed for 259 yards and a touchdown in a victory over the Scarlet Knights at Pittsburgh.

Felitsky, a junior, made his first collegiate start when Sal Genilla was unable to play because of an asthma attack. Felitsky completed 20 of 33 passes, including an 18-yard touchdown pass to Bill Osborn.

Jeff Van Horne kicked field goals of 37 and 42 yards for Pitt (5-4-1), which has an identical record as Rutgers.

Army 56, Lafayette 48--Quarterback Tory Crawford rushed for 208 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Cadets overcame five scoring passes by the Leopards’ Paul Struncius at West Point, N.Y.

Lafayette (5-5) held a 482-458 edge in total yardage. Army (5-5) gained 335 yards rushing, and the Leopards picked up 319 yards passing.

Cornell 28, Columbia 0--Jeff Johnson ran for a career-high 185 yards and the game’s first touchdown as the Big Red stayed in contention for the Ivy League title at New York by handing the Lions their 30th consecutive defeat.

Cornell (8-1, 6-0) will play Penn next week for the title.

Columbia (0-9, 0-6) became only the second major college team to lose 30 successive games. Northwestern holds the record with 34. The Lions are winless in their last 33 games, including two ties.

Yale 14, Princeton 13--Kelly Ryan connected with Wayne Detmer for a 62-yard touchdown, and John Duryea kicked a 17-yard field goal with 1:02 left as the Bulldogs (3-6, 2-4) rallied for an Ivy League victory over the Tigers (2-7, 2-4) at New Haven, Conn.

Boston U. 45, Colgate 17--Pat Mancini broke three school records while passing for 283 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Terriers won at Boston.

Mancini, a junior, ran his career total to 35 touchdown passes, breaking the record of 34 set by the late Harry Agganis in the early 1950s. Mancini completed 13 of 29 passes and broke school records with 147 completions and 1,850 yards in a season.

Delaware 27, Navy 14--Rich Gannon became the Blue Hens’ all-time leading passer and threw for a pair of touchdowns at Annapolis, Md., as the Midshipmen lost their sixth straight game.

Gannon pushed his career yardage to 5,312 yards, breaking the record of 5,254 yards set by Jeff Komlo in 1978.

Dartmouth 21, Brown 21--Alex Kos’ 41-yard field goal attempt bounced off the crossbar with 13 seconds left, and the Bruins settled for an Ivy League tie with the Big Green at Providence, R.I.
