Sherbeck Wins Teaching Pro Tennis Title
Unseeded Eric Sherbeck of Tustin defeated Tom Leonard of Glendale, 7-5, 6-4, Sunday to win the open division final of the fourth $5,000 Southern California Teaching Pro tennis championships at the Laguna Niguel Racquet Club.
Sherbeck, who won $900, had eliminated No. 2 Mike Fedderly, No. 3 Brian Turner and No. 5 Alvin Gardner in earlier rounds of the four-day tournament.
Leonard was also unseeded in the open division, but was the No. 1 seed in the 35-and-over division, which he won.
He defeated Robyn Ray of Newport Beach, 6-2, 7-5.
Mari Casta of San Ysidro defeated Jennifer Slattery of Huntington Beach, 6-3, 6-1, to win the women’s open singles title.
Fedderly, of Costa Mesa, and Bernie Mitton of Newport Beach defeated Jim Harper of Mission Viejo and Curt Stalder of Irvine, 6-4, 6-4 to win the open men’s doubles title.
