USIU Wins Its Women’s Golf Tournament
Laurette Maritz and Helen Alfredsson led United States International University to an 11-stroke victory Wednesday in the USIU women’s intercollegiate golf tournament at the Rancho Bernardo Inn and Country Club.
South Carolina had the lead after the first round Monday, but USIU took over first with a 299 Tuesday. USIU won with a three-day total of 908. Georgia took second with a 919 and Arizona was third with a 920 in the 15-team tournament.
Maritz and Alfredsson each shot 222. Stanford’s Kathleen McCarthy was the low individual with a one-over-par 220. USIU’s Allison Shapcott was 16th at 232.
San Diego State finished 11th (962). The top Aztec was Karen Engberg (29th) who had a 238.
