OTHER SPORTS : Northridge Soccer Team Nears Record Streak

A victory over Seattle-Pacific on Saturday night at North Campus Stadium would give the Cal State Northridge soccer team a school-record unbeaten streak of 13-0-1. The Matadors are 12-0-1 in their last 13 games.

Northridge had a bye in the first round of the NCAA West Regional last week. Seattle-Pacific outlasted Chico State, 1-0, in a game decided after 11 rounds of penalty kicks.

CSUN last played Seattle-Pacific in the playoffs a season ago. Seattle-Pacific won, 3-2, and went on to win the Division II championship.

Pete Coeler scored 35 points Saturday in The Master’s season-opening loss to Grand Canyon College in Phoenix. The senior forward from Van Nuys made 11 of 22 shots, including 7 of 14 from three-point range. He also had 10 rebounds.

Master’s opens its home basketball season at 7:30 tonight against Mount Vernon Nazarene of Ohio.

Former Taft High player Stacy Buck will start for UCLA Friday night when it plays host to Stanford in a match determining first place in the Pac-10. The junior is the sister of former U.S. Olympic men’s volleyball player Craig Buck. She moved into the starting lineup as an outside hitter because of injuries. UCLA, which plays at Cal tonight, is 14-1 in the Pac-10 and rated eighth in the NCAA Division I coaches’ poll. Stanford, 15-1 in conference, is rated 10th in the nation.

Former Newbury Park High standout Denise Ball of UCLA will compete in the NCAA Division I cross-country championships at Canada Hills Country Club in Tucson, Az., on Monday.

UCLA won its first District 8 title last Saturday at Fresno, edging Stanford, 69-72. Ball was the Bruins’ fourth runner, placing 23rd in a time of 17:29 over the 5,000-meter course.

Cal Lutheran cross-country runner Art Castle finished 64th at the NAIA national meet Saturday in Kenosha, Wis. It was Castle’s best finish in four national meets.

The former Kathy Slaten will make her first appearance as Kathy Slaten Ayala on the Northridge softball field on Saturday in the Lady Matadors’ 6th annual alumni game.
