Three South Bay Teams to See Grid Playoff Action Friday

Chadwick will play for the CIF Eight-Man Division championship while South Torrance will be at home against Arcadia and Redondo will be on the road at Santa Maria in Friday’s high school football playoffs.

Chadwick, 9-0, will be host to Pasadena Poly, 9-1, at 1 p.m. in the “large school” championship of the eight-man leagues. Chadwick dealt Poly its only loss in Prep League play, 29-12, and has scored 81 points in its two playoff games to reach the finals. The Dolphins are trying for their first CIF football title. The team is led by quarterback Jeff Kaufman, a 70% passer; running back Collin McDonald, a 1,000-yard rusher, and linemen Ben Rosin, Greg Burille and Fred Clark. Junior Charlton Jackson is a highly rated receiver.

South High, 8-3, will test Arcadia, 7-4, at 7:30 p.m. The Spartans won their playoff opener, 21-18, at Channel Islands, to advance. Running back Steve Kujawa scored twice to give him 23 touchdowns, but the focus of South’s attack may be running on a tender ankle this week. Arcadia advanced with an impressive 28-0 victory over Oxnard, which had been undefeated.

Redondo was equally impressive in its opener, whipping Murphy, 42-0. As a reward the Seahawks, 9-2, earned the long bus ride for the 7:30 p.m. game at Santa Maria, which ran its record to 10-1 by beating Monrovia, 32-20. Redondo’s Mike Stone stood out against Murphy, catching two Scott Yessner passes for touchdowns and returning an interception 59 yards for another. He also added a two-point conversion. He has 13 touchdowns this season. Yessner scored another touchdown himself.

Banning and Carson, who won their City 4-A openers, have the week off before moving on to semifinals. On Dec. 5 Banning (10-0) will face Kennedy (6-3-1) and Carson (9-1) will play Granada Hills (9-0-1).

Cal State Dominguez Hills will play California Lutheran University as part of a nine-game basketball home stand beginning at 8:05 p.m. Saturday. The Toros, 1-1 entering the week, split two games in the Southern Utah Tournament to open the season and played Grand Canyon College on Wednesday in their home opener. Senior forward William Alexander was named to the all-tournament team in Southern Utah, where the Toros fell to the host team, 85-68, but came back to beat Cal State Los Angeles, 74-66. Alexander scored 41 points and added 10 rebounds in the tourney.

The Dominguez Hills women’s team, coming off Tuesday’s loss at Cal Baptist, will play St. Thomas College of Minnesota at 5:45 p.m. Saturday as part of a double-header with the men’s team. The Lady Toros then head north, playing at Cal State Hayward on Tuesday.
