Girls Basketball : Santa Ana Gets Past Santiago

Lolly Figueroa scored 9 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter to help Santa Ana High School rally to defeat Santiago, 40-38, Monday in a girls’ high school basketball game at Santa Ana.

Santa Ana trailed, 26-21, after three quarters but Figueroa’s performance put the Saints (1-0) ahead late in the fourth quarter.

Santiago (0-1) had the ball and trailed, 39-38, with 12 seconds remaining but lost the ball to Santa Ana.

Trina Bruce had 8 points and LaTaunya Trotter had 7. Freshman Gracie Lopez, 5-feet 8-inches tall, led the Saints in rebounds with 8.

Estancia 38, Canyon 37--Erica Goodman scored 14 points and Shawna Newbern and Pam Young each added 8 to help Estancia to the victory at home. The Eagles (1-0) trailed for most of the game--they were behind, 23-18, at the half--but Goodman’s basket with 1:15 remaining gave them a lead they would never relinquish. Canyon is 0-1.

Morningside 64, Fountain Valley 42--Carla Gladden had 17 points, Tia Thomas 16 and Shunda Greene 14 to lead Morningside (1-0) to the victory at Fountain Valley. The Barons (0-1) were led by guard Melissa Handley who scored 14.

In first round of the Irvine Tournament:

Ontario 40, University 29--Katie Ho scored 9 points and Shelly Davis added 8 in a losing effort for University. The Trojans trailed by just three points after the first quarter but an Ontario surge in the second quarter gave it a 24-17 halftime lead.

Woodbridge 68, Dana Hills 26--Kathy Millat scored 28 points and Gilly Powell added 16 for the Warriors. Powell also had 17 rebounds.
