Boys Basketball Roundup : University Wins Costa Mesa Tournament Final

University High School won its first tournament championship Saturday night as the Trojans defeated St. Augustine of San Diego, 70-48, for the Costa Mesa Tournament championship.

The Trojans (3-0) dominated every aspect of the game, shooting 64% from the field and outrebounding the Saints, 40-18. University broke away in the first quarter and added to its lead throughout each quarter.

“They gave us a lot and we took advantage of it,” Trojan Coach Steve Scoggins said. “We played the way we are capable of playing and we beat a good team tonight.”

Lasse Glassen, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half, leading University to a 36-24 lead. The Saints had problems getting the ball inside and the Trojan defense forced the turnovers leading to easy baskets.

In the second half, St. Augustine (2-1) switched to a man-to-man defense, but the shooting of Eric Olin and Steve Stolzoff kept the Trojans ahead. Olin finished with 14 points and Stolzoff added 22, 20 of those coming in the second half.

In the consolation final, La Quinta (2-1) defeated San Marcos (1-2), 70-56.

In nonleague action:

Pius X 84, Servite 73--Paced by John Finon’s 27 points and the 21 added by Anthony Jenkins, Pius X took the lead at the end of the first half and was never seriously challenged.

Tony Smalley had 17 points in Servite’s losing effort.

Sonora 59, Anaheim 35--Center Geoff Crow scored 17 points and had 7 rebounds to lead the Raiders (1-0) to the victory in the opening game for both schools.

In the Lancer Invitational:

Gordon McNeil scored 20 points and John Welch added 18 to lead Trabuco Hills (4-0) to its first basketball tournament victory at Orange Lutheran High School.

McNeil was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

In the San Luis Obispo tournament:

Ocean View 99, South Bakersfield--Ricky Butler had 21 points, Desi Hazley 18, Doug Rice 16, Todd Pickard 12 and Todd Norman 12 to lead Ocean View (3-0) in the championship game.

In nonleague action:

Mission Viejo 59, Fountain Valley 53--Jeff Herdman had 18 points, Dave Hall 13 points and Todd Matthews 12 points to lead the Diablos. Fountain Valley was led by Rob Briggs (18 points) and Tom Rocklan (12).
