Janice Lum of Eagle Rock closed out her high school tennis career Friday with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Kyra Johnson of Fairfax in the City individual tennis final at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

The easy victory was Lum’s third straight and capped a career in which she went unbeaten against City competition. She lost only two sets in three seasons--one in the 1985 final and one in the 1984 final. Her three titles tied the record set by Linda Howell of Venice in 1972-1974.

Friday’s win, much like her career, was flawless. Lum sat back and kept the ball in play, waiting for Johnson to make mistakes.

In the first set, Lum jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Johnson came back, hitting some spectacular winners to cut the deficit to 4-2. Lum stayed with her game, though, and won the set, 6-2.

In the second set, Johnson, somewhat unnerved by being called for a pair of foot faults, was no match as Lum easily won, 6-0.

Now that her prep career is over, Lum, who lost only eight games in eight playoff matches, plans to play junior tournaments and then go to college. She hopes to attend USC.

In the doubles final, the No. 1-ranked team of Cindy Corrales and Jennifer Norian of Palisades defeated the No. 2-ranked team of Jennifer Spear and Michelle Herman of University, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
