San Diego High School Basketball : Santana Overcomes Two Deficits to Beat Granite Hills

Hank Turner converted a steal into a four-point play in the fourth quarter as the Santana High School basketball team overcame two 10-point deficits to defeat Granite Hills, 60-49, Friday in a Grossmont League game at Santana.

With Santana (2-0, 5-0) leading 41-40 in the fourth quarter, Turner stole a pass. He was fouled intentionally and made two free throws.

Santana then got possession of the ball and Matt Panebianco made a basket.

Panebianco had 17 points and 8 rebounds for Santana.

In other Grossmont League action:

Monte Vista 55, Helix 50--Scott Winne scored 20 points and Wayne Hallman added 14 to lead Monte Vista at Helix. With the score tied, 50-50, in the game’s final minute, Winne took an inbounds pass and passed the length of the court to Socrates Hattox, who was fouled as he scored. Hattox made the free throw to seal the victory for Monte Vista (2-0, 4-0).

Grossmont 53, El Capitan 39--Grossmont’s full-court press forced 27 turnovers in the league opener at Grossmont. Lance Williams had 14 points to lead Grossmont (1-0, 3-1), which had a 19-8 first-quarter lead. Jason Foggiano had 10 assists for Grossmont. Danny Curtis and Eric Lozoya led El Capitan (0-2, 1-2) with 12 points each.

NONLEAGUE

Mt. Carmel 67, Madison 58--John Krainock scored 27 points and Tim Coleman added 21 to lead Mt. Carmel at Madison. Madison (3-1) committed six first-quarter turnovers, enabling Mt. Carmel to take a 17-8 lead after the first quarter.

Clairemont 60, Southwest 50--Clairemont scored the first six points of the fourth quarter and went on to defeat the Raiders (0-5) at Southwest. Jason Deal scored 25 points and Vic Baer added 21 for Clairemont (4-1). Johnny Walker scored 26 points for Southwest but only two in the fourth quarter.

Tournaments

HILLTOP

Kearny 57, Hoover 53--John Williamson and Chris Ortiz scored 15 points apiece to lead Kearny. John Roots had 18 points to lead Hoover.

La Jolla 45, Point Loma 29--The Vikings got 14 points from Adam Kleid and 12 from Chas Huff. Arlondo Hill scored 14 to lead Point Loma.

Mira Mesa 65, Hilltop 60--David Lee scored 23 points and Mike Eicker added 14 to lead the Marauders. Bryan Brooker led Hilltop with 20 points.

Chula Vista 52, Sweetwater 50--James McCurdy scored 17 points and Tony Hyner added 16 to lead the Spartans.

TORREY PINES

Torrey Pines 70, Fallbrook 57--Point guard Robby Crisell scored 13 points in the first half to pace Fallbrook to a 34-31 halftime lead. Scott Thompson had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Torrey Pines (4-0). Mark Ringkamp led Fallbrook (2-1) with 14 points.

Mar Vista 61, San Diego High 53--Shake Sanchez scored 9 of his 12 points in the second period to boost Mar Vista (2-3). Andy Swindall scored 18 for San Diego (0-4).

GIRLS

Point Loma Coach Lee Trepanier recently listed Fallbrook as one of the top five teams in the county.

That didn’t faze the three-time state champion Pointers, as they routed Fallbrook, 84-37, at the Point Loma Tournament.

Terri Mann had 33 points, 23 rebounds and 14 steals to lead Point Loma (6-0) to its 93rd consecutive home victory.

Point Loma’s full-court press forced 26 first-half steals, enabling the Pointers to lead 52-19 at halftime.

Jennifer Jann paced Fallbrook (4-1) with 12 points.

In other nonleague action:

Crawford 38, University City 27--A full-court press in the first quarter enabled Crawford (3-1) to gain a 16-2 lead en route to the victory. Crawford’s Karla Salmi led all scorers with 14 points and teammate Carmella Hicks added 8. University City is 0-2.

San Dieguito 47, Mission Bay 42--Sophomore Cristina Willis had 26 points in a losing effort for Mission Bay (2-4). Mission Bay had the lead through the middle of the game but lost it late in the third quarter and never got closer than three points. San Dieguito improved to 3-7.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Santana 47, Granite Hills 28--Santana (2-0, 4-1) outrebounded Granite Hills, 38-19, for the victory. Santana’s Leslie Ellis led all scorers with 23 points. Julie Clancy’s 16 points paced Granite Hills (0-2, 1-3).
