ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Fountain Valley Tournament : Experienced Marina Routs St. Anthony, 84-57

When Marina was going through a youth movement, the Vikings took more than their share of lumps on the basketball court. Now it’s pay-back time.

With three-year starters Mark Georgeson and Steve Guild combining for 41 points and 30 rebounds, Marina crushed St. Anthony, 84-57, Friday night to win the Fountain Valley basketball tournament.

“When you have a lot of 15 year olds out there, it’s hard to win,” Georgeson said, recalling the Vikings’ recent history, which included these 1985-86 accomplishments: a third-place finish in the Sunset League, a 14-13 overall record and a 35-point loss in the Southern Section playoffs.

“We knew we were going to be good when we were sophomores,” Georgeson said. “We just had to wait for our chance. Our experience is just now starting to pay off.”

A 6-foot 10-inch senior center, Georgeson had 18 points and 18 rebounds to earn tournament MVP honors. Guild, a 6-6 junior forward who has been a varsity starter since his freshman year, added 23 points and 12 rebounds. Mike Meyers, another returning starter, contributed 15 points for Marina (4-0).

Leading, 40-30, at halftime, the Vikings scored 10 unanswered points to open the third quarter. The key, however, might have been their defense.

After relying on a man-to-man defense in their first three outings, the Vikings used a variety of zones against St. Anthony (5-2) trying to contain the Saints’ point guard, Darrick Martin. Martin scored 17 points, many of those late in the game. In third-place game:

Servite 65, Fountain Valley 50--Shawn Sullivan and Nick Marusich combined for 34 points for the Friars (3-3).

Marusich, a 6-8 senior forward, led the way with 18 points as Servite rebounded from Thursday’s 10-point loss to Marina.

“That was one of our better games,” Servite Coach Larry Walker said. “We haven’t played that well up to this point. I think it’s just a matter of getting our heads together.”

Jim Borgquist, a reserve guard, had 13 points to lead Fountain Valley (2-3). He provided the only bright spot for the Barons, who trailed by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter.

“That’s as poorly as we can play,” Fountain Valley Coach Dave Brown said. “It was just a poor, poor effort. We’re trying to figure it out. We’re mystified right now.”
