ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Boys’ Roundup : Lucas Scores 28 to Pace Katella Over Pacifica

Richard Lucas scored a game-high 28 points to lead Katella to a 65-50 Empire League victory over Pacifica Friday night at Pacifica High School.

Katella (2-0, 8-1) led, 46-42, going into the fourth quarter and the Knights hit 11 of 12 free throws.

Pacifica is 0-1, 4-4.

In other Empire League games:

Kennedy 68, El Dorado 67--Glenn Tarlton’s free throw with four seconds left gave the Fighting Irish (2-0, 6-3) the victory over the Hawks (0-2, 2-5) at Placentia. Mike Keith led Kennedy with 27 points and Brian Cardenas led El Dorado with 24.

Cypress 67, Esperanza 48--Frantz Reyes scored 17 points and had 9 rebounds and Matt Ritter had 16 points to lead the Centurions at Cypress. Rod Nay scored 12 points and Ron Harvey 10 for the Aztecs. Both schools are 1-1 in league and 2-5 overall.

Los Alamitos 68, Loara 44--Mo Warner and Ryan Blossey led the Griffins to victory over the Saxons, scoring 16 and 12 points respectively, at Loara High School. Todd Eaton scored 10 points for Loara.

Los Alamitos put the game away in the first quarter, shooting 60%. Los Alamitos is 2-0 and Loara is 0-2.

In the San Dieguito Tournament:

Newport Harbor 72, Vista 42--Drew Sheward scored 15 points and John Alstrom 13 for the Sailors in the first round of the 16-team tournament.

In the Glendora Tournament:

Brea-Olinda 55, Diamond Bar 53--Ron Thomas hit an 18-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give the Wildcats the victory in a semifinal game at Glendora High School. Brea-Olinda (5-3) was led by Bob Terry’s 26 points and 11 rebounds. Thomas added 14 points and 6 rebounds. The loss was the first of the season for Diamond Bar (8-1).

In nonleague action:

Newport Christian 43, Heritage 35--Newport Christian led by as much as 18 in the third quarter and midway in the fourth quarter. Newport Christian is 1-0 and 2-4. Heritage is 0-1.

Santa Ana Valley 63, Laguna Beach 55--Scott Herdman scored 26 points in a losing effort for the Artists (4-5) at Laguna Beach.

Magnolia 83, La Habra 61--Senior forward Mark Lyon scored 26 points and junior forward Mike Goff added 25, along with 16 rebounds, for a home victory for Magnolia (7-1).

Sunny Hills 63, La Mirada 51--David Chisum scored 21 points to lead the Lancers (7-3) over the Matadores.

Scott Ray scored 20 points for La Mirada.
