WINTER SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : SIMI VALLEY GIRLS TOURNAMENT

Teresa Palmisano scored a game-high 19 points as Buena High won its fourth straight Simi Valley girls’ basketball tournament title with a 76-52 victory over Kennedy.

It was a rematch of last year’s tournament final, which Buena won by four points. Saturday was a different story.

Buena (8-1) outscored Kennedy, 23-11, in the first quarter and the Golden Cougars never recovered.

Palmisano was named the tournament most valuable player. Forward Diane DeCree led Kennedy (8-3) with 18 points.

In the third place game, Kristie Sterbens canned two free throws in the final 10 seconds of the game to seal Simi Valley’s 54-53 victory over Alemany (10-3).

The score was tied at 47 with 1:24 remaining in the game. After that, the lead changed hands five times until Leigh Wilcox hit a five-footer with 22 seconds left to give Simi Valley a 52-51 lead.

In other games, Dos Pueblos defeated Santa Clara, 56-45, to finish in fifth place; Newbury Park beat Ventura, 60-42, to finish seventh, and Fairfax defeated Canoga Park, 70-23, in the consolation final.
