WINTER SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Free Throws Help El Camino Beat Reseda

Sean Davis made two free throws with less than two minutes to play to key El Camino Real’s 53-47 victory over Reseda in a Valley League basketball game Wednesday night at El Camino.

Sophomore forward Brent Lofton came off the bench to score 16 points and grab eight rebounds for El Camino Real, which took its first lead on Damon Orlando’s three-point play with three minutes left in the game. Robert Stepner, who scored 16, helped Reseda regain the lead by sinking a jump shot.

But Davis hit two free throws that gave El Camino Real the lead for good at 44-43.

Reseda led, 39-35, after three quarters but El Camino Real (5-6 overall, 1-2 in league) applied man-to-man defense in the fourth quarter and outscored the Regents by 10.

Junior Nick Warner of El Camino Real scored 14 points and added six rebounds. Davis scored a season-low eight points but had eight rebounds.

Jeff Ricks scored 15 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds for Reseda (4-5, 0-2).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Simi Valley 101, Royal 53--Don MacLean had game-high totals of 20 points and 11 rebounds as Simi Valley (14-1 overall, 2-0 in league) won its eighth consecutive game against Marmonte League rival Royal.

Five Simi Valley players scored in double figures. Richard Murphy scored 13, Travis Bice and Shawn DeLaittre scored 12 and Butch Hawking added 10. Murphy and DeLaittre each had 10 rebounds.

Darius DeMaio scored 11 points for Royal (0-10, 0-2 in league).

L.A. Baptist 66, Santa Paula 44--Mike Null had 18 points and 10 rebounds and teammate James Hoback had 17 points and 13 rebounds for L.A. Baptist (8-2) in the nonleague game at L.A. Baptist.

St. Bonaventure 42, Moorpark 32--Andy Wagoner scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and teammate Mike Miller added 10 points for St. Bonaventure in the Tri-Valley League game. Randy Wagner led Moorpark with 12 points and 13 rebounds and Dave Romero scored 10.

Windward 54, Cal Prep 46--Jeff Laff scored 19 points for Windward, which outscored Cal Prep, 20-6, in the fourth quarter of the Liberty League game. Darryl Parrish led Cal Prep (5-4, 2-1 in league) with 29 points and 15 rebounds.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Burroughs 74, Crescenta Valley 20--A school-record 29-point first quarter propelled Burroughs to an easy nonleague victory at Crescenta Valley.

Burroughs (10-1), which led at halftime, 39-9, was led by forward Kim Powers with a game-high 16 points. Kelly McCauley had 13 points and nine other players scored for Burroughs.

Calabasas 57, St. Genevieve 42--Sandi Thomsen scored 23 points and teammate Heidi Thorsen added 19 for Calabasas (4-5) in the nonleague game at Calabasas. Ann Baida led St. Genevieve (7-4) with 19 points.

Chaminade 50, El Segundo 20--Trish Khristen led Chaminade (7-2) with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Teammates Anna Suarez and Melissa Chappell had 13 rebounds each for Chaminade.

Corvallis 46, Immaculate Heart 27--Senette Smith had game-high totals of 20 points and 11 rebounds in the Sunshine League game. Corvallis (5-5, 1-0 in league) led, 13-4, at the end of the first quarter. Ingrid Hillderand of Corvallis had 10 rebounds. Immaculate Heart is 0-3 and 0-2 in league.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

L.A. Valley 75, Antelope Valley 51--Valley took an early 20-7 lead and went on to win the Southern California Conference opener at L.A. Valley.

Tracy Atkins, Maryjo Testa and Bernadette Tillis scored 14 points each for Valley (13-3), which led, 45-21, at halftime.

Antelope Valley (5-7) was led by center Kim Fairchild with a game-high 18 points.

Gonzaga 93, Cal Lutheran 45--Guard Robin Allen scored 14 points and set a school record with 17 assists to help Gonzaga (4-6) hand host Cal Lutheran its fourth consecutive defeat. Karen Kime scored 21 points and Tammy Tibbles added 20 for Gonzaga, which led at halftime, 44-21. Gloria Phillips paced Cal Lutheran (2-8) with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

GIRLS SOCCER

Chaminade 6, Brentwood 1--Carol Bentley of Chaminade (4-1-3, 1-0-1 in league) scored four goals and teammate Chris Casazza scored two to lead Chaminade in Sunshine League play at Chaminade.

Chaminade, which led, 5-0, at halftime, limited Brentwood (1-4-2, 0-1-2 in league) to only six shots on goal. Stacey Reiss scored Brentwood’s only goal midway through the second half.
