Mackovic Fired After Taking Chiefs to Playoffs
Coach John Mackovic, who led the Kansas City Chiefs to the National Football League playoffs for the first time in 15 years, was fired Thursday after his fourth season with the team, owner Lamar Hunt announced.
“The chemistry of an organization is an intangible that is crucial to its success,” Hunt said. “My evaluation is that our football team is lacking that ingredient.”
Hunt said there would be no immediate decision on Mackovic’s replacement.
Mackovic, who has one year remaining on his contract, compiled a 30-34 regular-season record at Kansas City. The Chiefs finished this season with a 10-6 record but lost to the New York Jets, 35-15, in the AFC wild-card game.
Mackovic was not present at Hunt’s news conference.
