BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS : Alemany Remains Undefeated in League : Swanson Scores 23 Points and Lucid Adds 12 in 57-51 Win Over Notre Dame

Dave Swanson scored 23 points, 18 in the second half, and Bill Lucid had 12 as Alemany High remained undefeated in the Del Rey League with a 57-51 basketball victory at Notre Dame. Alemany is 5-0 in league, 12-4 overall. Bruce Heicke led Notre Dame (2-2, 4-9) with 16 points. Notre Dame’s Kurt Schmiederer added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Josh Oppenheimer scored 11 points. Swanson scored 18 points in the second half.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Harvard 68, Cathedral 65--Steve Green and Charles Patton each sank two free throws in the final minute to give Harvard a come-from-behind Santa Fe League victory. Green gave Harvard a 66-65 lead with a minute remaining in the game by sinking both ends of a one-and-one opportunity. Patton then sank two free throws to seal the victory for Harvard (4-0, 8-3).

Green scored 19 points for Harvard and teammate Mike Lowe had a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Bel-Air Prep 58, Campbell Hall 48--Donny Sakida scored 19 points for Campbell Hall (2-2, 5-8) in the Delphic League game. Teammates Tim Sutton and Tim Jensen added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Bel-Air Prep (4-1, 8-6) was led by Sean Lewis, who scored nine of his 18 points in the final quarter when Bel-Air Prep outscored the Vikings, 19-12. Campbell Hall led, 27-26, at halftime but was unable to hit the front end of three one-on-one free throws in the final quarter.

Chaminade 65, La Salle 45--Kevin Black scored a game-high 21 points for Chaminade (4-0, 8-5) in the Santa Fe League contest.

Highland Hall 84, West L.A. Baptist 26--Six players scored in double figures for Highland Hall in the Westside League as the Hawks recorded a season-high, one-game scoring total. Dax Tobin scored 14 points for Highland Hall and Wes Parrish and John Pope each added 12.

Highland Hall (2-1, 3-5) held a 36-13 halftime lead and outscored West L.A. Baptist, 31-7, in the fourth quarter. Highland Hall had 52 rebounds. West L.A. Baptist is 0-3 in league.

Canoga Park 44, Grant 40--Jerry Burmester scored a game-high 14 points and teammate Roz Linton had 17 rebounds for Canoga Park (1-1, 3-7) in the nonleague game. Canoga Park never trailed and led by at least four points throughout the fourth quarter after taking a 26-20 halftime lead.

West Valley Christian 49, John Jenkins Academy 34--Randy Srock scored 11 points for West Valley Christian (2-0, 6-3) in the Christian Schools Athletic Conference game at Chatsworth Park.

L.A. Baptist 37, Western Christian 34--After outscoring Western Christian, 16-2, in the second quarter, L.A. Baptist (2-1, 10-3) slowed the game’s pace in the fourth quarter, holding the ball for more than four minutes en route to an Alpha League victory.

James Hoback led L.A. Baptist with 14 points and scored six points in the final quarter. Western Christian is 2-1 in league.

Bell-Jeff 75, Salesian 60--Chris Dyer and Shemus Martin each scored 15 points to help Bell-Jeff even its Santa Fe League record at 2-2. Bell-Jeff (7-6) made 30 of 51 shots and 15 of 20 free throws. Alfred Lopez scored a game-high 17 points for Salesian (0-3 in league).

Holy Martyrs 64, Cal Prep 54--Viken Tchorbadjian scored a game-high 19 points and had seven assists in the Liberty League game. Armen Abramian had 11 points and Ara Markarian added 10 for Holy Martyrs (2-1, 7-4). Darryl Parrish and Pat Collette each scored 15 for Cal Prep (3-2, 6-5).

Highland Hall 66, Newbridge 31--Wes Parrish of Highland Hall had game-high totals of 23 points and 19 rebounds in the Westside League game. Dax Tobin added 21 points and 8 rebounds for Highland Hall (1-1, 2-5).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Birmingham 72, Taft 45--Shagarro Lattin and and Amy Rubinroit each scored 24 points for Birmingham (1-1, 8-4) in the West Valley League game at Taft. Teammate Tenita Bennett added 14 points.

Taft (1-1, 5-1), which was led by Kana Snider and Julie Koppenkin with 17 and 14 points, respectively, was outscored, 21-3, in the first quarter.

San Gabriel 50, Burbank 47--Rachel Norris scored a game-high 28 points to help the Matadors in the Foothill League game at Burbank.

Christy Calderon led Burbank (1-1, 8-5) with 14 points and Karrie Parsons added 12.

West Valley Christian 42, John Jenkins Academy 8--Randi Arnold had 14 points and 10 rebounds and teammate Donnell Johnston added 13 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for West Valley Christian (2-0, 6-2) in the Christian Schools Athletic Conference game at Chatsworth Park.

Westlake (Los Angeles) 46, Corvallis 38--Lisa Cohen scored a game-high 23 points to lead Westlake of Los Angeles in the Sunshine League game. Westlake jumped out to a 22-12 lead in the first quarter and never trailed. Beth Cogan scored 10 points and Gina Pinto had 11 rebounds for Corvallis.

Simi Valley 78, Camarillo 40--Julie Arlotto led Simi Valley with 22 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and four assists in the Marmonte League game. Paula Cooper and Leigh Wilcox scored added 16 and 14 points, respectively, for Simi Valley (13-3, 4-0 in league). Julie Tlantec, Angie Long and Nicole Victoria each scored 10 points for Camarillo (7-7, 0-3 in league).

Thousand Oaks 60, Westlake 39--Amy Chandler scored 18 points and Barbara Tanner added 16 as Thousand Oaks (8-8, 3-1 in league) rolled to an easy Marmonte League win. Thousand Oaks led, 17-6, at the end of the first quarter and, 31-16, at halftime. Kaci Salmina and Erica Bryce each scored 15 points for Westlake.

Notre Dame 36, St. Genevieve 30--Despite 20 points by St. Genevieve’s Ann Baida, Notre Dame won the San Fernando Valley League opener. Vicki Hosek scored nine points, Kristen Borella added eight points and 13 rebounds, and sophomore center Andrea Banducci had 19 rebounds for Notre Dame (7-2). St. Genevieve is 7-5.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Moorpark 61, Santa Monica 60--Tom Neumayr sank two free throws with four seconds left to give Moorpark the victory in the Western State Conference game. Neumayr scored a team-high 20 points as Moorpark improved to 12-6 and 2-3 in conference. Teammate Chad Staples scored 11 points. Derrick Gathers led Santa Monica (12-9, 1-1 in conference) with 25 points.

Cal Baptist 91, Master’s College 82--Phil Hahn scored 24 points and Pete Coeler added 21 but Master’s College still suffered its 16th defeat of the season in an NAIA District III game. Cal Baptist led at halftime, 43-36, and Master’s (1-16, 0-4 in District III) never mounted a serious challenge in the second half.

Mike Banks led Cal Baptist (7-10) with a game-high 25 points. He made 10 of 14 shots and five of five free throws. In Monday’s game, Grand Canyons defeated Master’s College, 97-84.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 65, Master’s College 52--Gloria Phillipps scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds in 15 minutes as Cal Lutheran posted a non-conference win at home. Kim Peppi added 13 points, six assists and four steals for Cal Lutheran (4-10).

Cal Lutheran opened the second half with an 18-4 run that put the game out of reach. The Master’s committed 35 turnovers and Cal Lutheran committed 32. Michelle Spink led the Master’s with 14 points.
