SDSU Women Shoot Down Hawaii, 96-56

San Diego State shot a school-record 68% from the floor in a 96-56 upset of Hawaii in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s basketball game Monday night.

In getting their third-straight victory, the Aztecs (3-2 in the PCAA, 6-8 overall) used two big scoring runs to put Hawaii (4-1, 12-2) away by halftime. Trailing 2-0, SDSU scored the next 19 points over a six-minute span. Leading, 25-8, with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Aztecs scored 10 unanswered points for a 35-8 lead.

The Aztecs made 34 of 50 field-goal attempts, breaking the record of 67.3% against Cal State Fullerton in the 1981-82 season. Coming into the game, Hawaii’s opponents were shooting 38% from the field.

Guard Sheri Edmonds tied SDSU’s free-throw shooting percentage record, hitting 10 of 10 from the line. The former Patrick Henry High player tied Judy Porter, who made 10 of 10 against UCLA in the 1981-82 season.

Forward Jessica Haynes led all scorers with 17 points and had 14 rebounds and 11 assists. Shelda Arceneaux scored 16 points and Edmonds had a career-high 14. Judy Mosely paced Hawaii with 12 points. The teams meet again at 7:30 tonight.
