ATHLETE OF THE WEEK : DeCree Enlivens Kennedy With Experience, Points
Kennedy’s Diane DeCree is used to winning, so when the Golden Cougars missed their first 10 shots last Friday at Chatsworth, she became worried.
“I thought, ‘My Lord, what is happening to us?’ ” DeCree said.
Later, it was the Chancellors who wondered what went awry as Kennedy rambled to a 57-29 Valley League win. It was Kennedy’s 83rd straight league victory.
“We came alive when Diane came alive,” Coach Craig Raub said. “She has the experience and is the girl the other players look to.”
DeCree, a returning All-City player, broke the scoreless spell with a layup and finished with 26 points and 17 rebounds. In a 55-33 win over Cleveland last Wednesday, the 6-1 forward had 16 points and 17 rebounds.
Chatsworth and Cleveland are supposed to be the only Valley League teams capable of upsetting Kennedy. Each team will get one more opportunity this season, but if last week’s games are an indication, neither stands much of a chance.
