Orange County Roundup : Ex-Rams Public Relations Head to Receive Hall of Fame Award

Jerry Wilcox, former Rams public relation director, will be presented with the 1987 Woody Dietch Award at the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame sports banquet Feb. 16 at the Emerald Hotel in Anaheim.

Wilcox will be honored along with Jack Youngblood, Pat McCormick, Ann Meyers and Cap Sheue, all recent Hall of Fame inductees.

Paul Salata, founder of Irrelevant Week which each year honors the last player selected in the NFL draft, will be given the halls Good Guy Award.

Ram Coach John Robinson will be master of ceremonies. The honors dinner is open to the public. For ticket information call 835-4580.

St. John Bosco High School, the Big Five Conference runner-up, heads the list of selections for the sixth Faith, Family and Football all-star team that will be honored Feb. 5 at the Anaheim Hilton.

St. John Bosco placed Terry Furey, Oscar Meza, Jim Sterner and Tom Furey on the team. Bill Redell, who led Crespi to the Big Five Conference title, will be honored as Coach of the Year.

The awards, based on Christian character, service, leadership, academics and athletics, are presented to the top 23 seniors at the state’s parochial high schools.

California Angel pitcher Don Sutton and former Los Angeles Ram quarterback Pat Haden will be masters of ceremonies. Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus will be honored as the Man of the Year.

Chinese gymnast Li Xiao Ping will make his home debut for the Cal State Fullerton men’s gymnastics team Jan. 30, when the Titans meet top-ranked UCLA in Titan Gym.

Ping has recorded six scores of 10 during his career on the pommel horse and also will perform on the rings and high bar.

The Titans are ranked fourth in the nation in the coaches’ poll and recently won the UC Davis Invitational.

The second annual California Baseball Coaches Assn. clinic will be held Jan. 24 at Cal State Los Angeles from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The clinic is for high school coaches, and admission is free. Mike Curran, Esperanza coach who led the Aztecs to the Southern Section 4-A title last season, will speak as will Harry Minor, special assignment scout with the New York Mets; Frank Sanchez, USC pitching coach, and Al Ferer, UC Santa Barbara coach.

Bill Ross, Santa Ana coach, will receive a coaching achievement award.
