Three sophomores at Valley College and four from Moorpark have accepted scholarships to attend Division I schools.

The signings by the Valley College trio bring to 13 the number of Monarchs players who will be playing football for Division I schools next season, Coach Chuck Ferrero said.

Bryant Wyatt (6-0, 180) and Chris Coleman (6-0, 190), a pair of reserve cornerbacks who transferred to Valley from Pierce after playing together at Reseda High, signed with Tennessee Tech. They join lineman Pete Warda, another Pierce transfer, who committed to Tennessee Tech last week.

The third player, tight end Jeff Sampson (6-4 1/2, 225), will attend Northern Arizona of the Big Sky Conference.

At least four other Valley players will transfer to Division I schools after earning their associates’ degrees at the end of the spring semester, Ferrero said.

The Division I signings of Moorpark players include running back Rob Davis (Western Michigan), quarterback Steve Haddad (Toledo), linebacker Johnny Smith (Boston College) and linebacker Jeff Ebert (California).

In addition, offensive tackles Matt Hickman and Louis Saiz accepted scholarships to Western State College of Colorado, an NAIA school.

In all, Moorpark Coach Jim Bittner expects 21 of the 22 sophomores from his 1986 team to attend a four-year school next year. The majority, he said, will attend non-scholarship schools.
