Jon Haar scored 21 points and Rob Lucas added 17 to lead Southern California College to a 99-80 win over The Master’s College in Newhall on Saturday night.

“Man, they really lit it up,” said Master’s Coach Randy Stem of SCC (14-6). “I have two shooters. They have five or six. They ran the break extremely well. And we just ran out of gas. They’re the kind of team I love to watch play. Unfortunately, they were playing us.”

Haar, a 6-4 senior from Van Nuys, was matched against his former L.A. Baptist High teammate, Pete Coeler. “We were able to pick up the pace in the second half and shut down Coeler,” Haar said. “They couldn’t stay with us.”

Coeler finished with 32 points, but 23 came in the first half. Rocky Shipes added 21 points for the Mustangs, who fell to 3-19.

Even though Master’s built an early eight-point lead, SCC’s pressure defense caused numerous turnovers and Southern Cal went ahead by nine at the half. From that point, the game’s outcome was never in doubt.

One of the the most exciting moments in Bross Gym came after the game when Adam Dennis, a Master’s baseball player, made five shots in a shooting contest, including one from half-court, to win a four-wheel-drive truck from a local car dealer.
