A unidentified man was shot and killed Thursday in what police suspect was a gang-related shooting after an apparent argument at a South-Central Los Angeles intersection, authorities said.

The victim’s car broadsided a Rapid Transit District bus after he was fatally wounded, police said.

Describing circumstances surrounding the incident as confusing, Lt. Willie Pannell said several people were gathered around a car at 54th Street and Van Ness Avenue when “apparently there was a very loud conversation of some type. Then there was a shooting.”

The car then suddenly accelerated, Pannell said, running through the intersection and colliding with the bus. No one on the bus was injured.

After the collision, someone either pulled or pushed the victim from the car, the lieutenant said, adding that investigators had not determined whether the victim was alone in the car when he was shot. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers launched a search for suspects, but “we really don’t know who we’re looking for,” Pannell said.

He said detectives from the South Bureau Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums (CRASH) unit and the 77th Street Division station set up a perimeter in the area to search for the suspect or suspects.
