The San Diego Sockers shut out the Los Angeles Lazers, 8-0, Friday night in a Major Indoor Soccer League game played in front of 8,534 fans at the San Diego Sports Arena.

It was Socker goalkeeper Jim Gorsek’s first regular-season shutout. Gorsek had 17 saves. Sunday against Baltimore, Gorsek gave up seven goals.

His record last season was 19-2, but this season he is 3-6 after missing five weeks with a broken left hand.

Gorsek’s only other shutout came in a 7-0 win over the Minnesota Strikers in the deciding game of their semifinal series on May 14, 1985. The Sockers’ only other regular-season shutout was a 9-0 win registered by Zoltan Toth against the Wichita Wings on Jan. 3, 1986.

Branko Segota was the Sockers’ offensive star, scoring a goal and tying the club record with five assists. Juli Veee and Vidal Fernandez have had five-assist games.

The six points give Segota 23 goals and 25 assists for 48 points. That places him third in league scoring, behind Tatu of Dallas (52) and Jan Goossens of Kansas City (50).

Hugo Perez and Waad Hirmez had two goals apiece, Juli Veee had a goal and an assist and Jean Willrich and Ade Coker each scored a goal.

It was a nightmare of a game for Lazer goalkeeper David Brcic, who made 11 saves on 27 shots.

The Lazers are 6-17, the Sockers are 15-11.
