San Diego High School Basketball : El Camino Gets Upset Win Over Oceanside, 65-61

Edmond Johnson had 21 points and 8 assists Friday night as No. 8 El Camino beat No. 4 Oceanside, 65-61, to break the Pirates’ 10-game winning streak in an Avocado League game at Oceanside.

El Camino (9-1, 20-3) led 22-10 after the first quarter and was ahead, 61-46, with 6:09 left.

Oceanside (9-1, 16-6) rallied to pull within two points, 63-61, with 20 seconds left. But Johnson made two free throws with one second left to clinch the victory. El Camino moved into a first-place tie with Oceanside.

“El Camino came out and really scored from the perimeter,” said Don Montamble, Oceanside coach. “That was the difference between this game and the first one.”

Lee Cobb added 21 points for El Camino and Buster Evans had 13. Oceanside was led by Junior Seau’s 25 points. Darrell Noble scored 15 and Morey Paul added 12 for the Pirates.

AVOCADO LEAGUE San Marcos 57, Ramona 51--Mike Francis scored 14 points and Matt Barrick added 13 to lead San Marcos (6-5, 15-10) at Ramona. John Schweitzer scored 15 and John Leichty added 14 for Ramona (4-6, 11-10).

PALOMAR LEAGUE San Dieguito 52, Orange Glen 35--Jack Minger scored 17 points to lead San Dieguito (8-2, 14-7) into a showdown against first-place Mt. Carmel Tuesday. Steve Clinger scored 12 points to pace Orange Glen (2-8, 6-17). San Dieguito outscored Orange Glen, 15-5, in the third quarter.

Torrey Pines 74, Fallbrook 60--Courtie Miller scored 19 points and Kevin Flannigan added 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead Torrey Pines (8-3, 18-6), which remained in third place a half-game behind San Dieguito. Mike West led Fallbrook (3-8, 8-15) with 21 points and Mark Ringcamp added 15. Torrey Pines, which led 27-26 at the half, outscored Fallbrook 20-11 in the third period.
