The score was 19-2 in favor of Northridge, but the Cal State Long Beach baseball team got its share of hits during the loss to the Matadors on Tuesday. In fact, when the hit totals were added, the outcome was close.

Northridge had 20 hits, including eight for extra bases. Long Beach had 10 hits--all singles--but when the number of Matadors hit by 49ers pitchers is taken into consideration, the final tally becomes 20-16.

John Balfanz, who had belted two home runs against Long Beach in the team’s first meeting a week before, was hit four times, a school record.

Long Beach Coach John Gonsalves, who used six pitchers against the Matadors, denied the 49ers were throwing at Balfanz. “We’ve always pitched him inside,” he said.

Chris Pinsak and Mark Anderson also were hit--Pinsak after he knocked in a run with a double and Anderson after a two-run homer and an RBI single.
