Community College Basketball : Cypress Loses to Riverside but Clinches Playoff Berth

Greg Kund made an eight-foot shot with 20 seconds left to give Riverside College to a 75-74 upset of Cypress in a men’s Orange Empire Conference basketball game Friday at Riverside.
A shot by Cypress’ John Jackson was deflected as time ran out.
Despite the loss, the Chargers still clinched third place and a state playoff bid because Orange Coast defeated Citrus.
Kund scored four points, all in the last two minutes. Mike Stewart led the Tigers (1-9, 13-21) with 22 points. Greg Mathews had 10 points and 17 rebounds for Riverside.
Andy Olivarez scored a team-high 21 points for Cypress and Kris Brodowski added 17 for the Chargers (5-5, 17-14).
Orange Coast 72, Citrus 66--Mike Kelly made 11 of 20 shots from the field and and 9 of 10 from the free-thrown line to score a game-high 31 for the Pirates (4-6, 22-9).
In Orange Empire Conference women’s games:
Riverside 74, Cypress 66--Deneen Long scored 24 points and Vanessa Johnson 22 as Riverside (9-1, 20-7) clinched the conference championship at Cypress. The Chargers (8-2, 19-9) were led by Venetta Dorlis with 16 points. Pam Fritsch, who was averaging 15 points and 12.7 rebounds for Cypress, injured her knee with 11:06 left in the first half and didn’t return.
Citrus 63, Orange Coast 59--Karen Rindone scored 21 points and Lisa Schumaker 18 for the Pirates (4-6, 15-17) in the lost at Citrus. Robin Gater scored 18 points for the Owls (6-4, 14-14).
Rancho Santiago 59, Saddleback 56--Holly Wood and Demeral Gibson scored 16 points for the Dons at Saddleback.
In a women’s South Coast Conference game:
Golden West 96, Compton 94--April Marion scored on a layup with six seconds remaining as the Rustlers won the conference championship at Huntington Beach.
The Rustlers led, 64-44, with 17 minutes remaining, but Compton came back to take the lead, 87-84, with five minutes remaining. Marion had 31 points for Golden West (14-0, 31-1). Compton (7-7, 8-11) was led by Mona Brown’s 31 points.
