Roundup : Selman Free Throws Lift Foothill, 42-41

Senior guard Ashley Selman made two free throws with four seconds left Saturday night to give the Foothill High School girls’ basketball team a 42-41 victory over Gahr at Foothill. Gahr (21-6) had a 60-foot desperation shot at the buzzer hit the rim and bounce away.

Foothill (22-3) trailed at halftime, 26-18, but outscored Gahr in the second half, 24-15.

Sue Davis had 20 points to lead the Knights. Molly Wanpler had 18 points for Gahr.

In other 4-A playoff games:

Mater Dei 57, Thousand Oaks 52--Senior forward Hallie Formaneck scored 17 points and Geri Gainey added 13 as the Monarchs (22-6) defeated the Lancers (13-12) at Mater Dei. Lina Mascarenas scored 14 points for Thousand Oaks. The Monarchs broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Lancers 17-10 to take a 32-21 halftime lead.

Edison 79, Mira Costa 39--The Chargers (26-1) outscored Mira Costa (23-5) in the second quarter and coasted to the victory at Edison. Kristi Smith had 31 points and 10 rebounds and Denise Ogburn had 13 points, 5 assists and 4 steals for Edison.

Edison, the No. 4 seed, plays St. Joseph Tuesday night in the second round.

Hawthorne 76, Santa Ana Valley 46--Susan Hatchett scored 18 points in a losing effort at Hawthorne. Sharon Murrell added 12 for the Falcons (13-7). Hawthorne is 18-8.

Marina 75, Chaffey 45--Dawn Charroin scored a school-record 34 points, setting a Marina season scoring record (397 points) in leading the Vikings (16-10) to a victory at Chaffey. Charroin also set a single-game school rebounding record with 22. Bridgette Ealy led Chaffey (16-6) with 12 points.

Huntington Beach 59, Pasadena 57--The Oilers (13-11) edged Pasadena at Pasadena.

Lynwood 71, Canyon 24--Top-seeded Lynwood (27-2) breezed past Canyon (13-10) at Lynwood.

In 2-A action:

Fullerton 65, Garden Grove 41--Heidi Shikuma scored 26 points and Vicki Silva added 24 to lead the Indians to the victory at Fullerton.

Fullerton (16-6), which was ahead the entire game, held a 30-21 halftime lead. Garden Grove (15-7) was led by Allyson Jenkins’ 13 points and Marian Mendo’s 12.

Orange 50, Walnut 43--Suzette Sargeant scored 25 points, had 13 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 blocked shots to lead Orange (14-10) to an upset victory at Walnut (19-6). Alicia East added 14 points for the Panthers.

Woodbridge 57, La Mirada 42--The Warriors jumped out to a 10-point first-quarter lead, stretching it to as many as 19 points as they won at La Mirada. Junior forward Kathy Millat scored 20 points for Woodbridge (20-7), and Gilly Powell added 13. Tricia Gibson led La Mirada (14-11) with 17 points.

La Quinta 59, St. Bernard 33--Senior point guard Kris Takayama had 23 points and 8 assists, leading the Aztecs at St. Bernard. La Quinta (18-5) used a half-court trap and outscored St. Bernard in the third quarter, 16-3. Sue Paulsen added 10 points for La Quinta and Felicia Dixon led St. Bernard (15-8) with 11 points.

In Small Schools action:

Flintridge Prep 44, Liberty Christian 23--Tina Fejtek led Flintridge Prep (13-7) with 19 points. Liberty Christian (15-3) committed 19 first-half turnovers.
