Orange County Baseball : UCI Continues Winning Ways With a Sweep
UC Irvine swept a nonconference doubleheader against United States International University Saturday on Anteater Field, extending its winning streak to five games.
Irvine (11-11-1) won the opener, 3-0, behind junior Craig Brink’s first collegiate shutout, a six-hitter.
Gabby Rodriguez (4-1) pitched a complete game eight-hitter in the second game as UCI won, 6-2.
Most of the Anteaters’ offensive was provided by first baseman John Seeburger, who had two doubles in the first game and a home run in the second. The Gulls are 8-13.
In nonconference college play:
Cal State Fullerton 4, Cal Poly Pomona 1--Mike Harkey threw a complete-game eight-hitter and center fielder Mark Baca went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored to lead the Titans (11-8) on Titan Field. The Broncos are 8-10.
Cal State Long Beach 8, Chapman 7--The Panthers (7-8) led, 6-2, after six innings, but the 49ers (5-14-1) came back with six runs with two outs in the eighth at Hart Park.
UC San Diego 2-2, Southern California College 0-0--Rick Nowak threw a no-hitter in the first game and Rick Abott a four-hitter in the second to lead UCSD past the Vanguards (5-11) at SCC.
In nonconference community college action:
Southwestern 7, Rancho Santiago 3--Brian Raum gave up a three-run home run in the first inning and Southwestern had the lead for good at Rancho Santiago (8-3).
