Mission Viejo’s Hattrup May Resign

John Hattrup, Mission Viejo High School girls’ basketball coach, may not return next season as Diablo coach.

Hattrup, 28, is in his 10th season at Mission Viejo. Under Hattrup, the Diablos have won two Southern Section titles (1982 and 1987) and played in the Division II final of the state championship tournament in 1982.

Hattrup said that while he is happy coaching at Mission Viejo, he also wants to teach. He earned his teaching credential four years ago, but has yet to be hired.

“I’m in charge of the study hall, which means I deal with the people who are in trouble,” Hattrup said.

Study hall supervisor is a classified, not credentialed, position in the Saddleback Valley Unified District, of which Mission Viejo is part.

Hattrup said he told his team at the beginning of the season that this may be his last at the school.
