NBA Roundup : Wilkins Scores 37 to Lead Hawks

When Dominique Wilkins wants the ball, the Atlanta Hawks let him have it.

The high-scoring forward sank a short jumper with five seconds left in regulation Tuesday night at San Antonio to tie the game, and the Hawks took advantage of five Spurs turnovers to win in overtime, 113-106.

Wilkins scored 5 of his 37 points in overtime to lead the Hawks to their eighth win in a row, and his late basket kept them from blowing a game they led by 16 in the third quarter.

In overtime, Doc Rivers scored seven consecutive points to enable the Hawks to pull away in a hurry.

“Down the stretch, I want the ball,” Wilkins told the Associated Press. “Usually, my teammates give it to me.”

Monday night at Atlanta, Wilkins outscored the Chicago Bulls, 8-2, in a two-minute spurt late in the game that led the Hawks to win No. 7 in the streak.

Despite the victory, the Hawks still trail the Detroit Pistons by percentage points in the Central Division race.

Seattle 136, Houston 127--Tom Chambers scored a career-high 42 points at Houston to lead the SuperSonics to victory in double overtime.

The Sonics won despite a strong performance by Akeem Olajuwon, who had 38 points, 17 rebounds and 12 blocked shots.

Allen Leavell’s three-point basket with two seconds left saved the Rockets from a loss in regulation. Seattle’s Eddie Johnson sank two free throws with 13 seconds left in the first overtime to tie it, 119-119.

With Houston leading, 125-123, in the second extra period, Chambers converted a steal to tie it, then rebounded his own miss to give Seattle the lead for good.

New Jersey 121, Washington 79--Moses Malone suffered a stiff neck, possibly from watching the Nets go flying past at East Rutherford, N.J., and sat out the second half.

The Nets, who led, 58-35, when the big center retired for the night, went on to record their biggest margin of victory in the NBA.

Mike Gminski, with Malone ailing, had a season-high 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. The 79 points are a season low for the Bullets, who have lost five in a row on the road.

Philadelphia 100, Cleveland 91--With Julius Erving on the disabled list and Andrew Toney out with the flu, rookie Dave Wingate made the most of his first NBA start at Richfield, Ohio. He scored 22 points and teamed with Charles Barkley (23 points, 15 rebounds) to pace the 76ers to victory.

The 76ers had only eight players dressed and only seven played, but they managed to overcome a solid performance by the Cavaliers’ Ron Harper, who had 28 points, 10 steals and 7 assists.

Detroit 116, New York 93--It turned out that New York was a good place for the Pistons to start their string of 16 road games in their last 23 of the season.

Bill Laimbeer had 20 points and 19 rebounds, and Sidney Green scored 6 of his 13 points in a two-minute, 15-2 rally that broke the game open in the third quarter.

The Knicks, who had won four in a row, trailed only 67-62 when Green started the winning spurt.

Golden State 125, Sacramento 114--Joe Barry Carroll scored 31 points, and Sleepy Floyd scored 19 of his 23 in the second half at Oakland to lead the Warriors to victory.

Floyd scored six of his points in a 17-6 spurt early in the fourth quarter that gave the Warriors control.
