Orange County Prep Baseball : Petko’s Hot Streak Keeps Servite Winning, 8-4

Mike Petko went 4 for 4 with two doubles Wednesday to lead Servite High School to an 8-4 victory over Marina in a Loara tournament quarterfinal game at Anaheim.

Petko is 7 for 8 in three tournament games. Right-hander James Ferguson allowed only one hit and struck out five in five innings.

In other Loara tournament action:

Loara 5, La Quinta 1--The Saxons scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in their quarterfinal victory at Loara. Scott Wood, whose single scored Loara’s first run in the second, had a two-run single to highlight the fourth. The top-ranked Saxons (3-0) meet third-ranked Ocean View tonight at 7 in the semifinals at Glover Stadium.

Ocean View 10, Dana Hills 4--The Seahawks (3-0) hit five home runs, including two by first baseman Matt Bertram, at Dana Hills. Brent Knackert, Vic Fresca and Mike Danduran also hit home runs, and pitcher Dan Naulty allowed only one hit--Ron Openshaw’s three-run homer in the third inning--in going the distance.

Diamond Bar 17, Irvine 6--The Brahmas pounded three Vaquero pitchers for 18 hits on their way to the easy quarterfinal victory at Diamond Bar High.

El Toro 5, Western 4--Sean Drinkwater had two hits, and Steve Wood drove in a run with a single in the sixth inning to help the Chargers (4-1) defeat the Pioneers (1-2) at El Toro High.

Lakewood 8, Valencia 7--John Easley had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs to help the Lancers defeat the Tigers at Valencia. Brett Gregory hit a homer for Valencia.

University 9, Magnolia 0--Casey Simpson went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and six RBIs, and Steve Keer had two hits and scored three runs at University High. Pitcher Toby Foreman went six innings, allowing one hit and striking out 10, for the Trojans (2-1).

El Dorado 10, Sunny Hills 1--Kevin Schula hit a grand slam and Bret Boone had a home run, double and a single, as the Golden Hawks (4-1) won at El Dorado. Steve Gill struck out five and allowed two hits in five innings to gain the victory.

Huntington Beach 8, San Clemente 3--Brian McLeod, Brad Walker and Dominic Alvarez each hit two-run home runs for the Oilers (2-1) at San Clemente. Chad Phillips went the distance on a five-hitter and struck out seven for Huntington Beach.

Laguna Hills 3, Downey 0--Ron Kortman and (five innings) and Mike Smedes (two) combined for a four-hitter to help the Hawks (2-1) at Laguna Hills High. Rob Milo had two hits and Aaron Arredondo had an RBI double for the Hawks.

Katella 4, Newbury Park 0--Marc Gerdes went 2 for 3 with an RBI to help the Knights (1-2) at Anaheim’s Boysen Park. Kevin Shaw pitched two innings for the win.

Villa Park 4, Kennedy 3--Sophomore Trent Eye’s two-out single in the seventh inning scored John Genova with the Spartans’ winning run at Villa Park High.

Pacifica 8, Anaheim 2--Bobby Thome went 4 for 4 with a home run and double, and Wes Castellano had a two-run triple to lead the Mariners (1-2) at Pacifica High.

In Santa Ana/Tustin/Newport Tournament action:

El Modena 1, Tustin 0 (nine innings)--Ray Gallegos scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Vanguards (2-2) beat the Tillers (1-1) at Orange’s Hart Park. Dave Black pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits, but Marcus Esposido, who pitched the ninth, got the win for El Modena.

Santa Ana 5, Newport Harbor 3--John Hefler had a double, triple and three RBIs to lead the Saints at Santa Ana High. Ed Milum hit a solo home run for Newport Harbor.

Mater Dei 14, Saddleback 3--Frank Tatti had two hits and three RBIs, and Kevin O’Conner had a double and three RBIs to help the Monarchs (3-1) at Mater Dei High. The Monarchs will play El Modena in Friday’s semifinals.

Foothill 7, Don Lugo 6--Kent Madole had three hits and two RBIs and Doug Kopcha pitched five innings to gain the win, as the Knights (1-1) won at Foothill High.

Corona del Mar 11, Estancia 5--Craig Nixon went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, and Kurt Ehmann had two hits and an RBI to help the Sea Kings (2-1) at Woodbridge High.

In nonleague action:

Cypress 9, Hacienda Heights Wilson 8--The Centurions (1-2) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, the first on Steve Winderburn’s sacrifice fly and the game-winner on Rene Gutierrez’s RBI single, to defeat the Wildcats at Cypress High.

Savanna 3, Fullerton 1--Senior left-hander Robert Lee pitched a four-hitter and struck out 12 to help the Rebels (3-0) defeat the Indians (1-2) at Fullerton High. Chris Trumpour had a two-run double and Tony Osendorf had an RBI single for Savanna.

Brea-Olinda 7, La Habra 2--The Wildcats made the most of four hits and five stolen bases in their win over the Highlanders at Brea-Olinda High. Robbie Grubbs had an RBI single for the Wildcats (1-2).

St. John Bosco 9, Bolsa Grande 6--Senior shortstop Carg Windes went 3 for 4 and knocked in 4 runs to lead the Braves (4-0) at Bolsa Grande. Pitcher Tony Wollkampt (2-0) got the victory. he Matadors (2-1) were led by senior catcher Robbie Walker, who went 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs.

Orange Lutheran 8, L.A. Lutheran 5--Doug Siperly had two hits and two RBIs, and Chris Minogue had an RBI double and scored two runs for the Lancers (2-2) at Orange Lutheran High.
