Orange County Prep Baseball : Capo Valley Defeats Santa Ana, 2-1

Three Capistrano Valley High School pitchers combined on a four-hitter to lead the Cougars to a 2-1 victory over Santa Ana in the semifinals of the Santa Ana/Tustin/Newport Tournament at Hart Park in Orange.

Robbie Pratt (1-0) pitched 4 innings, allowing the run and all four hits, to record the win. Brett Snyder pitched the seventh inning to pick up the save, his first of the season.

In the championship semifinals:

Mater Dei 9, El Modena 5--The Monarchs advanced to the final with the victory at Rancho Santiago College.

In the fifth place semifinals:

Newport Harbor 4, Woodbridge 2-- Newport Harbor scored three runs in the third inning and led the rest of the way for the victory. Woodbridge is 1-2.

In the consolation bracket:

Corona del Mar 4, Rancho Alamitos 2--Kevin Maas hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to lead Corona del Mar (3-1) in a consolation semifinal at Mater Dei. Corona del Mar managed only three hits. Rancho Alamitos is 1-2.

Santa Ana Valley 4, Don Lugo 1--Sergio Nunez had three hits including a solo home run to lead Santa Ana Valley (1-2) at Newport Harbor. Don Lugo falls to 0-3.

Orange 9, Foothill 7--The Panthers scored three runs in the seventh to overcome a 7-6 Foothill lead and win the consolation semifinal at Foothill.

Dave Bjorkland led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second, and scored the tying run on a single by Mike Holloway. After a single by Emilio Avila sent Holloway to third, Paul Vinci drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly. Jose Mendoza’s base hit scored the final run.

Orange (3-2) led, 6-2, in the third, but Foothill scored two runs in the third and two in the fourth to tie the score, 6-6. The Knights took a 7-6 lead in the sixth, with back-to-back doubles by Sterling Crook and Doug Kopcha.

In nonleague action:

Orange Lutheran 9, Aquinas 6--Doug Siperly hit a two-run home run in the second inning and finished with three RBIs and Tim McCann went 2 for 3 with a run scored two RBIs and a home run to lead Orange Lutheran (3-2) at Aquinas (0-2).

Capistrano Valley Christian 7, St. Margaret’s 6--Second baseman Steve Niednagel singled in the winning run for the Eagles in the seventh inning for the nonleague victory at home.

Bret Biegert (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Capistrano Valley Christian (2-2), which also got a big day from third baseman Brent Ward. Ward went 2 for 3, including a double, and had 5 RBIs.

John Fabino (0-1) was the losing pitcher for St. Margaret’s (1-1).

Esperanza 7, Valencia 3--Tom Redington went 2 for 4 and hit his fourth home run of the year and Bart Goldman went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs with a home run and a double to lead the Aztecs at Valencia. Jim Short also went 3 for 3 for Esperanza (4-0). Roger Weems relieved in the first innning, with the score tied, 2-2, and threw the next six innings, allowing one run, to record the win.

Kennedy 3, Newbury Park 2--The Fighting Irish broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning to win the fifth-round consolation game.

Mark Roah walked, stole second and scored the winning run on a single by Scott Pool for Kennedy (2-3). Newbury Park is 1-4.

Greg Hansell (1-1) pitched the first five innings, with five strikeouts.

Newport Christian 10, St. Michael’s 1--Phil Bader went 3 for 4 with three runs and an RBI and Donovan Whitworth was 2 for 4 with three runs to lead Newport Christian (3-0) at Lincoln Park in Corona del Mar. St. Michael’s is 0-1.
