Orange County Prep Baseball : Servite Hands Esperanza Its First Defeat, 5-3

Corey Wentz and Mike Robertson hit home runs Tuesday to lead Servite High School to a 5-3 victory over previously unbeaten Esperanza in a nonleague game at Servite.

Wentz hit a three-run homer in the second inning to give the Friars a 3-1 lead. Servite (5-1) increased its lead to 5-1 in the third when Robertson hit a two-run homer.

Andy Croghan (1-0) pitched three innings of hitless relief. James Ferguson, who pitched the sixth inning, was replaced by Todd Cook to start the seventh. Ferguson returned to retire the final two Esperanza batters after the Aztecs scored two runs, and he got the save.

Esperanza (5-1), the defending Southern Section 4-A champion, was held to three hits. Aztec shortstop Tom Redington, who had five home runs going into the game, was 1 for 2 with 2 walks.

Jason Moler gave up 6 hits and 5 runs in 4 innings and took the loss.

El Modena 5, Brea-Olinda 4--Dan Angeller scored the game-winning run from third off an error by Wildcat catcher Greg Quiring in the seventh at Brea-Olinda. Jeff Powers went 1 for 1 with 2 runs and 2 walks and Ross Bauer went 2 for 4 with an RBI for El Modena (3-4). Jerry Starr allowed 8 hits and struck out 4 in 7 innings for the Vanguards. Mike Oziminski went 3 for 4 with a home run in the seventh, a double in the third and 2 RBIs for the Wildcats (1-5). Shon Riley (1-1) allowed 3 hits and struck out 3 in 3 innings.

Huntington Beach 3-6, Long Beach Jordan 0-1--Brian McCloud went 5 for 6 with an RBI and 2 runs in the doubleheader to lead the Oilers (5-2) at Huntington Beach. Dominick Alvarez (3-0) allowed 8 hits and struck out 3 in 7 innings in the first game and Chad Phillips gave up 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4 in 7 innings in the second game for the Oilers.

Valencia 7, La Mirada 2--Rudy Lopez (1-1) threw a two-hitter in six innings as the Tigers (2-3) won at La Mirada. Brett Gregory led Valencia (2-3) with a home run. Dennis Burbank got the save.

Gahr 6, Garden Grove 4--Isidro Maldonado went 2 for 2 with an RBI for the Argonauts (2-1) at Gahr. Jessie Chavez gave up 7 hits and struck out 2 in 2 innings for Garden Grove. Todd Wassman relieved Chavez in the third and gave up two hits in four innings.

Westminster 11, Corona 4--Ben Mendoza went 3 for 4, including 2 doubles and 2 RBIs, to lead the Lions in the nonleague game at home. Brian Stubbs (2-0) was the winning pitcher for Westminster (6-0), which had 15 hits. Hagin Sieker was the losing pitcher for Corona (3-2). Westminster’s Ryan Klesko went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs and senior shortstop Al Rodriquez was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs.

El Dorado 8, Ocean View 5--Bret Boone hit two home runs, leading El Dorado to the nonleague victory at home. Steve Gill (3-0) was the winning pitcher.

Los Alamitos 7-2, Long Beach Wilson 6-0--The Griffins (4-5) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the opener, and senior left-hander Randy Hines pitched a one-hit shutout in the second as Los Alamitos swept the Bruins (4-3) at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Robbie Nen went 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs, including an RBI double in the seventh inning, for the Griffins in the first game. Mike Kelly added an RBI triple in the seventh and scored the winning run on a groundout. Los Alamitos scored two runs on an infield error in the second inning of the nightcap.

Bolsa Grande 4, Santa Ana Valley 3--The Matadors (3-1) scored three runs with the help of two Falcon errors in the first inning and added another on Mike Roberson’s RBI single in the fourth to defeat host Santa Ana Valley. Jimmy Ramirez had three hits and an RBI for the Falcons (2-3).

Artesia 13, Marina 7--The Pioneers (4-2) had 15 hits in beating the Vikings (6-2) at Marina High. Rick VanderRiet went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles, an RBI and 3 runs scored for the Vikings.

Western 9-5, Sonora 1-3--Bob Noson (2-1) allowed 3 hits and struck out 9 in 6 innings and Troy Babbitt went 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs for Western (5-2) in the first game. Eric Kawamoto (1-0) gave up one hit in the final three innings of the second game and drove in the two-winning runs with a single in the fifth. Sonora dropped to 2-4.

St. Margaret’s 16, Army/Navy 8--Jeff Howe hit his second home run of the season in the third and doubled in the first and seventh to lead the Tartans (2-1) at Army/Navy. Mark Flather (2-0) gave up 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7 in 4 innings for St. Margaret’s. Jonmark Fabaino relieved Flather in the fifth and struck out three.

In the Colton tournament:

Colton 3, Canyon 2--David Bladow (1-1) was en route to a no-hitter for the Comanchees (4-1), but Colton had four singles and a fielder’s choice in the seventh to win the championship at Colton. Joe Furukawa doubled in the first and Ralph Pacheco had a RBI single. Phil Gasca walked, stole second and scored on an error to give Canyon a 2-0 lead in the fourth.

In the Loara tournament:

Sunny Hills 11, San Clemente 7--A walk and a fly ball lost in the sun in the eighth inning allowed the Lancers to win the consolation game at San Clemente. Mike Ana (1-0) was the winning pitcher. Matt Koivisto (0-1) took the loss for San Clemente (1-4). The Tritons were led by Andy Greek, who went 3 for 3, including a home run and double for 3 RBIs. Dave Arntsen also had a home run.

In the Palos Verdes tournament:

Edison 10, Torrance 0--Tom Thobe (2-0) struck out seven in three innings for the Chargers (5-1). Jon Martin went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles, a home run and 2 RBIs. Chris Powell went 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 RBIs.
