STATISTICAL WATCH : Simi Valley Pitchers Are Run-Producers

Scott Sharts and Tim Laker, Simi Valley’s top pitchers, have allowed 18 earned runs in 21 innings. But they have produced more runs than they have surrendered. Sharts, who also plays first base, has four home runs and Laker, who catches, has three. They have driven in 19 runs and scored 16. Laker is hitting .500 and Sharts .391. . . . Westlake (3-2) has a .345 batting average and a .609 on-base percentage. . . . Crespi has won four or five games with an earned-run average of 2.19 and a batting average of just .211.

Baserunning: Hart’s Sheldon Sparks stole seven bases against Cerritos last week and has stolen 12 in four games. . . . Burbank catcher Eric Vargas has thrown out 11 of 14 runners attempting to steal. . . . Burroughs is feeling the loss of No. 1 catcher Rick Hoban, who is academically ineligible. In six games, opponents have stolen 21 bases in 30 attempts. But backup John Butler has improved lately, nailing five of the last nine. . . . Notre Dame’s Matt McElreath has five steals in five attempts. . . . Highland Hall has stolen 33 bases in 33 tries, including 14 in Tuesday’s 8-1 win over Viewpoint. . . . Providence’s Steve Ross has seven steals.

Batting: Through four games, six Poly players have six or more runs batted in and the team has outscored its opponents, 63-9. . . . Matt Franco, Jim Henderson and Greg Struhl, Westlake’s Nos. 3, 4 and 5 batters, have eight RBIs each in five games. Franco is 11 for 15 (.733). . . . Valley-area Alpha League teams hold a 6-0 record this season against teams from the Santa Fe League and have outscored opponents, 56-15. . . . Burroughs has allowed 38 runs and 20 have been in the second inning.

Softball: Oak Park has scored 31 runs on only 15 hits--all singles--in two games. In a 21-1 win over Viewpoint, Oak Park had four hits and 21 walks. . . . Erin Sweeney’s grand slam against Camarillo was the La Reina player’s sixth extra base hit in four games. . . . Saugus pitcher Cathy Lewis struck out 17 and walked none in a 2-0 win over Santa Monica. . . . Jackie Patten of Van Nuys hit two home runs and teammate Leah Charbonneau hit a grand slam in a 26-6 win over Reseda.. . . . Camarillo has lost four games by a total of five runs.

Golf: The Westlake golf team, the defending Southern Section champion, hasn’t lost a dual match since 1984, a winning streak that reached 41 straight after last Thursday’s 385-415 victory over Buena.

Girls basketball: Louisville’s Andrea Knapp, who will attend Cal, completed her four-year career as the Valley’s all-time leading scorer and ranks 11th on the Southern Section list with 1,871 points.
