Silverman’s Status Is Undetermined at El Camino

Beth Silverman, a junior pitcher who is undefeated in three seasons with the El Camino Real High girls softball team, missed her second straight game Wednesday.

Silverman has not played or practiced since last Wednesday, when, according to another teammate, she cursed at second baseman Stacy Trapp during a nonleague game at Newbury Park.

After the Newbury Park game, Silverman’s teammates complained about her attitude and work habits, Trapp said. El Camino Coach Neils Ludlow would not comment on the incident other than to say a final decision on the pitcher’s status has not been reached. He called a meeting for parents of team members Wednesday night to discuss the situation.

Trapp said Tuesday that a majority of El Camino players would refuse to play if Silverman remained on the team.

Silverman was sick last Thursday and missed school and practice. She was in school Friday, but the team did not practice. Silverman did not play in Monday’s game against Chatsworth because of a team rule prohibiting anyone playing after missing a previous practice.

Ludlow told Silverman not to attend Tuesday’s practice because he felt a “cooling-off” period was necessary, according to Sandy Silverman, Beth’s father.

Silverman’s absence from Tuesday’s practice made her ineligible to play Wednesday.
