Community College Roundup : Fullerton Wins on Smith’s No-Hitter

Freshman pitcher Traci Smith threw a no-hitter and struck out 10 Friday to lead the Fullerton College softball team to a 12-0 victory over Long Beach City in a South Coast Conference game played on the Hornets’ field at Fullerton.

Liz Cervantes went 3 for 4 with a triple, and Sandra Williams went 3 for 4 with a double to lead the Hornets. Fullerton (1-2 in conference, 13-7 overall) stole seven bases. The Vikings fell to 0-3 and 1-9.

In other South Coast Conference games:

Cerritos 1, Golden West 0--Pitcher Estella Gutierrez’s second-inning single scored Vandy Wilkerson from third for the game’s only run. Host Cerritos raised its record to 3-0 in conference and 18-6 overall. Golden West fell to 2-2 15-8.

In Orange Empire Conference action:

Rancho Santiago 1, Riverside 0--Sandy Ortiz led off the first inning with a single, advanced to third on a sacrifice and an error, and scored on a ground out to lift the Dons to the win at Santa Ana College.

The hit by Ortiz was the only one allowed by Riverside pitcher Brooke Ryan, who took the loss. Joyce Lyman (10-2) earned the victory for the conference-leading Dons (7-0, 13-5), allowing two hits, striking out seven and walking none. Riverside is 3-4, 13-4.

Saddleback 7, Orange Coast 2--Pat Sawyer had three hits, including a home run, to help the Gauchos defeat the Pirates at Saddleback College. Lori Methot pitched a four-hitter and struck out nine for Saddleback, which improved to 5-2 and 19-3.

In men’s volleyball action:

Orange Coast 3, Golden West 1--Brian Lewis had 27 kills and Joe Graham had five blocks to lead the Pirates (5-3) to a 16-14, 10-15, 15-13, 16-14 win over the Rustlers in a South Coast Conference match played at Orange Coast College. The Rustlers were led by Tim Johnson, who had 22 kills.

In men’s track:

Saddleback 79 1/2, Orange Coast 65 1/2--John Cronin won the 1,500- and 800-meter races and anchored the Gauchos’ winning 1,600-meter relay team to lead Saddleback (2-1) to the Orange Empire Conference victory over the Pirates (2-1) at Saddleback College.

Rancho Santiago 82, Citrus 39--Ryan Gillette won the long jump, the javelin and the high jump to help the Dons (3-0) defeat the Owls (1-2) in an Orange Empire Conference meet at Citrus College.

In women’s track:

Orange Coast 75, Saddleback 43--Michelle Stevenson won the 100-meter hurdles, the 400-meter hurdles and the triple jump to lead the Pirates (2-1) over the Gauchos (2-1) in an Orange Empire Conference meet.

In the Cuesta Invitational swim meet:

The Orange Coast College men’s and women’s swim teams were in first place out of 17 teams after a day of competition at San Luis Obispo. The Pirates men accumulated 145 team points and were well ahead of Diablo Valley (117) and Golden West (111). Matthew Harris won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:55.21, the fastest community college time in the state this season.

The Pirate women, defending state champions, amassed 185 1/2 points Friday and were ahead of Diablo Valley (124) and West Valley (108).
