Aguilitas--The Whittier youth soccer team, comprised of boys under 14, will represent Southern California at the California Youth Soccer Assn. regional championships in June. The Aguilitas (15-0-1) advanced by winning the CYSA-South State Cup earlier this month with a 3-1 victory over Premier of Simi Valley.

DISMISSED John Fien, La Serna High School--The third-year basketball coach was removed from his coaching responsibilities by Principal Leo Camalich recently. Camalich cited a variety of reasons for the dismissal, including Fien’s history of receiving technical fouls. Fien, who guided La Serna to three Whitmont League titles, was ejected from a game earlier in the year after receiving technicals for objecting to an official’s call. “I’m pretty boisterous,” Fien said. “But if I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t do anything different. I think a team is an extension of the coach, and not one of my players had a T (technical foul call) in my three years. What does that say about my coaching?” Fien’s record was 45-23. He coached previously at Petaluma High, where he compiled a record of 101-41. He will remain a social studies teacher at La Serna.

PERFECT RECORD Dave Demarest, La Quinta High School--The head baseball coach at the Westminster school set a college record during his playing days at Cal State Long Beach. It is a mark that cannot be broken. In three seasons as a starting center fielder (1970-72), he never committed an error. In fact, Demarest, who attended Palos Verdes High School, never made an error after he let a ball go through his legs on his first try in his junior year in high school. “I had something like 500 tries in college,” he said. The perfect fielding record almost never made it into the books, however. On the final road trip of his college career, Demarest was forced to play third base after the entire 49er infield was suspended for curfew violations prior to a game with San Jose State. In the first inning of the game, Demarest booted a ground ball in the hole, then threw it in the dirt to first base, but the first baseman made the play. “From that moment on I played the line and never got close to another ball,” Demarest said.

POLLS Southern Section--Ratings for baseball and softball will be released weekly beginning Monday at the CIF headquarters in Cerritos.

HOME NOT SO SWEET Cerritos College--The men’s basketball team has a record of 250-61 in the Falcon gymnasium, but when it comes to the playoffs, home is not the place to be. Twice in the last two years the team has been beaten in post-season play on its own court. This year the Falcons were defeated, 81-75, in overtime by Compton in the third round of the state community college playoffs.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL HONORS Andre Wiley, Compton College--The 6-foot-7 sophomore, who earlier was selected most valuable player in the South Coast Conference, was voted state community college co-player of the year. He led the state in rebounding and scoring average.

Willie Joseph, Cerritos College--The 6-foot-3 Falcon forward, runner-up in the balloting for most valuable player in the South Coast Conference, was awarded a first-team berth on the community college All-State team. He has scored more points than any other player in Cerritos history.

Andy Olivarez, Cypress College--The 6-foot-5 Whittier High School graduate received honorable mention on the All-State team. He ranks second in single-season scoring for the Chargers.

PERMANENT SITES CIF--The governing body for California high school athletics has decided to establish permanent sites for state championships. Previously, state finals were rotated between sites in Northern and Southern California. Cerritos College has been chosen to host the state track finals. Other sites include the Oakland Coliseum (basketball), Cal State Fullerton (volleyball) and the University of the Pacific (wrestling). A proposal to hold a state cross-country championship, if approved in May, would place the event in Fresno.

TITLES Biola University--Its recent NAIA District III men’s basketball title was the fifth for the school since 1980. Biola finished the season 29-2.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK Rich Boline, Whittier High School--The Cardinal athletic director denied stories that he was ordered to prepare a disputed survey for a CIF releaguing committee that compared the competitiveness of schools in the eight-team Whitmont League. Critics charge that Whittier Union High School District officials ordered the study, then withheld the results because the study did not support their position on favoring the releaguing proposal. Said Boline: “I did the survey for myself. That’s my nature. I was just curious. It was done strictly for my own use.”
