Community College Baseball : Cypress Gets 2 in 10th to Defeat Saddleback

Cypress College scored two runs in the 10th inning Thursday--one on Troy Brown’s RBI double and one on an error--to defeat Saddleback, 4-2, in an Orange Empire Conference game at Saddleback.

David Rice allowed only four hits and struck out eight in 8 innings, but reliever Mike Bentley got the victory. Dean Martinez, who struck out six in 9 innings, was the loser.

Tony Mendoza went 2 for 5 with a home run in the fourth inning and a sacrifice fly in the eighth for Cypress (2-2). Saddleback’s Bill Lasher had an RBI single with two out in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. The Gauchos are 1-3, 7-9.

Orange Coast 10, Riverside City 4--Mark Rasmussen went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Manny Adams went 2 for 5 with three RBIs, and Brent Mayne went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Pirates at Riverside. Jim Foley went the distance, allowing 12 hits and striking out five for Orange Coast (3-1, 16-5).

Rancho Santiago 19, Citrus 6--Dave Kirkpatrick went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a home run to lead the Dons at Citrus. Frank Appice added three hits and three RBIs, Brent Reese had three hits and two RBIs, and Chris Chase had two hits and two RBIs for Rancho Santiago (4-0, 14-3).

In South Coast Conference games:

Fullerton 14, Pasadena City 1--The Hornets hit three home runs at Pasadena. Andy Ruscitto hit a two-run homer, his seventh of the season and fourth in the last three games, Tim Churchill hit a three-run homer, and Scott Einhorn hit a solo homer for Fullerton (9-2, 13-5-2).

Long Beach City 17, Golden West 13--Rene Rivera had four hits, including a home run, and five RBIs to lead the Vikings at Long Beach. Al Toney added three hits and scored three runs for the Vikings. Tom Smythe had three hits and three RBIs for the Rustlers (5-6, 9-8).
